Thread: Hate this manga like me?

I personally enjoy DGM but I'd have to disagree with everyone whose said that its a thoughtful Manga/ Anime because it really isn't.
The only reason there is a mysterious atmosphere is that it hasn't told you anything about anything yet, but that doesn't mean it has set up a mystery either.
It's classic Shounen plain and simple.
Shounen isn't supposed to be philosophical it's supposed to be a raito of 3:2 Action/ Plot.

on a side note Bleach isn't mysterious either.
The only mysteries are "Where is Ichigo getting his powers from?"
or "How did Rukia age from a little kid to a young woman if you're not supposed to age in Soul Society?"

How is DGM a classic shounen? The characters aren't - especially their ages (many of them are adults). The story isn't - the action began pretty quickly, and we had the story and plot from early on. And action? There was a lot of plot in the early volumes. The only thing that is typical shounen is this current arc, which a lot of former fans aren't fond of. The fact is that this manga still has a long way to go, which means that anything could happen. Right now, it's had a good plot, and then a boring shounen adventure one, but you can't just look at what's happening now and say the whole story is like that.

*sigh* we really need to put up a rule where any newbie who sets up a "this series sucks!" thread not only get banned, but get their pc hacked like it never got hacked before...

not that i'm defending the series really. in all honesty, there's something about DGM thats lacking yet, keeps me drawn in to it every week...... like suzuka, except maybe a lot better..

Yeah, this guy made threads like these in a bunch of sections. Not fun.

To me, DGM still feels like a fairly new series, even though it's actually quite long. Unlike something like Bleach, which could easily have ended after one big arc, I can't see that ending for DGM. Maybe that's the reason why I'm always so positive about its greatness; there's a good chance that it will end up being a really good manga. On the other hand, it could fail... but we don't know yet.

There may be some aspects of D.Gray-man that I'm not happy with, but I still think it is a very decent manga overall. It makes it on both my "currently reading" and "loved" lists, in any case. =P

I don't think these comparisons to other series are really necessary, though. I disagree with your statement about Bleach ending after one huge arc, DE. There were still many unanswered questions by the end of the humongous SS arc. The "master plan," the real plot was just only revealed when the real villain came out of hiding, so to end it there would have been like ending a book at its prologue. But that discussion belongs somewhere else... Point is, every series is great in its own way, and the plots of Bleach and D.Gray are so different that it doesn't make sense to compare them.

I don't think D.Gray will fail. Hoshino's a wicked storyteller, so even if her plot isn't the most original out there, she weaves it beautifully. I think one of her main problems are the fights. They're too messy and seem to lack any sort of real planning... which is probably why the current arc seems so bland. There have been so many consecutive fights. T_T But it seems like we're very near the end of them, so she can finally turn her focus back to the plot. Yay!

Well, as for the Bleach thing... I meant that had the story been set up that way, it could have ended after one arc. If Kubo Tite had chosen to reveal Aizen and have Aizen-battles and a conclusion then, it could have worked. On the other hand, there's no way D.Gray-Man could end soon. We haven't even seen the majority of the villains who we know exist. That's what I meant by a comparison - I can't actually see the manga being any shorter.

I agree with your thought about Hoshino's strengths, Jaimie. The fights aren't great, and they prevent important plot continuation, but when there is plot... I must admit that I like the way that things are inserted into the storyline a little bit at a time, enough to just feed curiosity without any major connections just yet. In other manga, important foreshadowing seems... well, obvious. With DGM, it feels like you really have to read everything and think about it, since it'll come up later (the conversation between Bak and Allen about Innocence, for example).
