    ~~Amen~~

    Allen's change wasn't that bad...and Road's neither.

The problem is...how will Hoshino-sensei would manage to snug in a filler that's again completely different from the current flow of plot? Like you said already, the plot has major changes, and that does mean it'll be pretty difficult to lead it back to its normal norms. The Ark is most likely one Highlight, and then stopping to make a filler with normal conditions like Akuma and missions with searching Innocence is completely out of place right now. The plot now is too far away to come back.

Earliest after that Ark and Highlight Hoshino-sensei might bring everything as close to the original conditions as possible, but never like before anymore. Plot-development, it isn't that bad. It's just the Ark right now that is a bit offside of the original plot with Akuma as actual enemies....but the change is still interesting.

Though I admit that Linali is, right now, annoying me. And Crowley and Kanda aren't even there, so....

Yeah, I'm gonna hafta disagree with you there, DE.

I think the consistent thing with all the characters is that they've gone through alot recently, and that has led to alot of growing and changes on teenage kids. Cos they are teenage kids. Most stories in this vein seem to make their main characters super-strong willed, but here we're seeing alot of changes as a result of their experiences, which I think is a good thing. Specifically,

Allen has seen alot of friends killed, including those he really tried to help (e.g. Suman), and even died himself - I'd expect he's getting pretty pissed off about by now. As for his arm changing, I haven't even noticed it's normal form changing, but if it did, maybe that's a consequence of it being destroyed and rebuilt?

Rinari has changed a bit (for the worse), but again, that might be the result of nearly dying. She seems to have been a little freaked out by that, and become very aware of the fragility of life.

Rabi started out as an impartial character, and tried to stay that way for a while. But after going through such extreme battles with the people he's with, he's come to bond with them despite his better judgement. You sound upset that they're giving him more depth and looking into his mind. Why? Would you rather he stay as two-dimensional comic relief?

Crowley isn't emo anymore cos he's dead.

    Kanda too.

Tyki was calm and cool until he got put up against someone who posed a real challenge to him. Like Light in Death Note, someone who ordinarily seems coolheaded can completely lose their cool if suddenly put in a situation which drastically doesn't go their way. In fact, the explosion of anger is often even more pronounced than with those who aren't usually so calm.

I don't really think Road's changed that much at all. She's always treated everything as a game. She took Allen, Rinari and Miranda, and what did she do? She disabled Miranda and Allen and dressed up Rinari as a doll. She didn't kill them, though she could have easily when they were passed out. She's just playing around and doesn't particularly want her toys to break.

We haven't seen any akuma lately cos the last God-knows-how-long have taken place in a very confined space, where no akuma are present. Our heroes aren't checking out random villages or going on walks through the forest anymore - they're confined within an Ark which it is impossible to enter or exit. Hence, no akuma.

Basically, everything comes down to the fact that these kids (and baddies) are going through life-devastating experiences the likes of which they have never experienced before. And they're all responding to these changes in their own way. Personally I think it's great to see characters responding uniquely instead of the same goody-goody-but-rational way that every other character from every other show does.

I have said for a while that my interest in the series has dropped a bit over this last part though, but I think that's more to do with the pacing than the content. Just felt like nothing really happened for a long while there, after they got to Japan. Things are starting to pick up again now, so I'm looking fcorward to seeing it play out!

I don't think that the plot is so far away that some akuma-killing fillers can't be introduced - even something like the Rewinding Town, that included Noah, would be great. Introduce a new Noah and send some people off to kill it. After all, there ARE only thirteen Exorcists left, and no one else can really fight them...

Allen needs his personality to show. So far, he doesn't seem to have one anymore.

I understand the reason for Rinari's change, I just think that it wasn't such a great idea for the manga plot.

The problem with Rabi is that he IS the new Rinari, complete with the worry over nearly the same people. I'm fine with the idea of giving him depth, but the way in which it is done completely changes his character. Yes, he can care about his friends, but there wasn't a need to completely duplicate the personality of another character to do so.

Crowley wasn't emo since getting in the Ark, and he wasn't dead then.

I'd like to point out that Light's change in behaviour was also considered to be out of character and didn't fit with the manga, and on top of that it inspired theories that he was being controlled. Since Tiki wasn't being used by a Death Note (I guess), there isn't much of an explanation for his weird behaviour.

Road hasn't been treating these recent events like a game. What I'm surprised about is her sudden reluctance to injure and torture people. This is the same character who nailed Allen's arm to a wall so that he couldn't move, yet she barely touches Chaozi (remember? Jasdevi burned his back... he was injured before) and only SAYS she will hurt the others. As for hurting Rabi more, she hasn't touched him, and so far, he's only faced what he needs to hear anyway. The truth hurts.

There's a logical explanation for not seeing akuma, but it doesn't change the fact that we haven't seen them for 3 volumes, and they're a key enemy. I'm just worried that they won't play a major role after this.

I've read plenty of manga where characters change as the result of life-changing circumstances (Nana being an example), and that's not what I'm pointing out here. What I see is a complete change in personality, art style, and tone of the story that makes it feel like a completely different manga than the D.Gray-Man that we were introduced to in the first few volumes. Things have just changed so much right now...

I'm still sticking up for Lavi though. He's my favorite character and I agree I like the sides of emotion they're portraying. He can't do anything right now because he's trapped in the mind of a sadistic little girl. Linali got her hair cut off and she put herself into her situation. (IE: fighting the monster) Lavi just swung randomly as far as enemies and happened to get Road as his one, albeit not a smart choice, but he couldn't withdraw after that.

It isn't just that Rabi's behaving like this now - he started acting this way around the time they entered Japan. Almost all of his behaviour since then has been what would normally be associated with Rinari, and he didn't have the excuse of being trapped by Road back then.

I'm not saying or believing this because I've started to dislike Rabi - well, I have, but it's because of this change. The Rabi of previous chapters is still a great character, and if his past had been revealed with him behaving that way, I would definitely have responded differently (well, and he'd have to have been written differently...).

He won't - there's a spoiler on Mangahelpers and while someone might die, it won't be Rabi.

Rabi is going to be very bad and hated after this, if the spoiler is true. (I have nearly 100 posts on Mangahelpers now! =P It feels nice to be part of discussions yet not posting every other post and knowing less about things than other people...)

Well, mostly, I just don't really agree with feeling that it's too different from what it was, except for the fact that recently it's been basically one long multi-faceted fight scene, whereas in the past it was more like short, quickfire missions.

Really, since they got to Japan, they've just been engaged in one long fight against the Noahs. And for that reason, I think something like

... isn't really gonna work. How would you do that? They're stuck in the middle of a dissolving ark, and in the middle of a fight! No one can just say, "oh hang on, I know we're in the middle of something here, but I've got an urge to just nip out and kill me some akuma. Don't worry, I'll be right back. I promise". See what happens after this whole business is finished.

    And as for

    - that's something else I never agreed with. I think his change in behaviour was completely in fitting with his character, and have always maintained that people who didn't see that never really understood his true character to begin with. But that's another story (literally )

I do agree one thing I really like about this manga at the start was it had a genuinely dark streak, and that does seem to have faded a bit and been replaced with pure action... but then, we are in the midst of a fight scene as I said, so I'm happy to just wait and see what plays out after this.
