Yeah, they're zombies, but they LOOK like his friends. His upset at zombie-Allen's death does prove that he has a hard time seeing them as completely separate beings - and who wouldn't, the way they appear? The fact that he did have to think to himself that they're illusions only reinforces that.

Following up from what I said in the other thread, I think this all fits perfectly. I reckon you seem to be comparing the story too much to how it should play out, and not letting it do its own thing.

First of all, they're not people he cares for. They're illusions, and he knows this. You're right that there are plenty of manga where he would have still done nothing regardless, but this isn't one of them. The characters in DGM all seem to be reacting pretty uniquely, and pretty realistically to the situations they're being put in, I think, as opposed to most series. And I think that's a good thing.

And they are adapting and changing in unique and realistic ways.

I think it does. For a long time he was supposed to not be getting attached, and so wasn't... but actually, deep down, he really was. He never showed it earlier, of course.

And here I'm saying that the reason for the very changes in the characters' personalities that you seem to have a real problem with is exactly the opposite of this. They are changing. Again, this isn't playing out like a stereotypical manga. Put your preconceptions to one side for a while and just see what happens!

All right, all right! =P Maybe I'm just upset at the way the story is going - I do have preconceived notions of how it should be, and things are going completely opposite in a direction I don't like. These recent chapters are just evidence of that... so yeah, maybe I'm being irrational now.

...Except for the part about Rabi not showing his personality. When something pops up without any hints, it's easy to take it as "the authour just included it", and I can't see any other explanation for that. But anyway...

The main hint we got was from the Old man.

And it seems Rabi was trying not to get attached (since he's Bookman) but he did.

Yeah, Bookman's comments about not getting attached - but the story was already deviating by that time (er, my comments in the Ark thread). I mean, he showed no signs of attachment before Rinari's fight with the level 3; even his reaction to Allen's disappearance was less upset than Rinari.
