The Exorcist coats are easy to explain :
1) To recognize themselves ("Hey, I'm your ally !!")
2) To bait out Akuma ("He has a coat...he is an exorcist..kill him,,)
3) To look cool (what would they wear - long brown robes of ancient librarians ??)

Good point. But, as South Park says, the Japanese don't have souls anyway.

Not that Sherman *is* Japanese. He's more like a Reever kind of guy.

Why would the Bookmen want to draw out akuma? Isn't their main goal survival so they can write down stories and stuff? The coolness I understand, but not the part about baiting akuma. o_o Of course, I did hear somewhere that Rabi had just returned from some mission (with Bookman, I guess) before his entrance - but then, why would Bookman say they're not part of Exorcists when they pretty obviously are?

As long as it's beneficial for them, they will help out the Black Ordeal. So they will fallow the rules and fight alongside them - probably that was the agreement between Ordeal and Bookman duo.

I'm actually amazed - conservatis as those guys from Vatican, let Chinese guy become a supervisor. It's somehow fishy

I'm suspecting that they're just not related to the Vatican...? For them to wear coats they'd have to be official Exorcists, and since I doubt Rabi found that hammer on his own - he was probably the result of some random search (like Rinari).

Vatican may be conservative, but seeing as how both contenders were Chinese... and it's the Black Order; if you're racist, you'll probably get killed seeing as how the top warriors (Exorcists) are from all around the world. Besides, they're practically a separate branch altogether.
