I think it's possible to contain the stats via skin. ForumMonkey Demos - Powered by vBulletin see here.

I can add a collapse button on the stats header, no problem.

The login box I took from the above site, so it should be the correct size. If not, it's not hard to edit the skin a bit to make things look good.

Advanced search, I can add it somewhere between the buttons at the top.

tho I just did an invert color for dark gray to light gray, so now it looks like it's indented.

I would love to help out, but I don't have the time ATM. What I will say though, is I think you are all going about designing this the wrong way. Before you go and start throwing designs all over the place, why not have a brainstorming session, try comming up with some phrases about how you think the site should look, maybe some colours you would like to see.

    I'll start:
Easy on the eyes. Formal but not sterile. Not in your face (no large or garish images). Not dark, but not too bright. Maybe some pastel colours.Nothing SciFi-ish or metal looking. MUST NOT LOOK LIKE ANY APPLE PRODUCT. Profesional looking logo (not digging at you csuti).

Also, I'm not keen on your logo csuti, I'm not saying its bad, I just don't think it works too well. Firstly its too big, I'm not keen on large shiny buttons (its a style I've never been in favour of, nothing against you) and I'm also of the opinion that logos should fit seemlessly into the background. Take the VB logo for example.

^ This white bit here blends into the forum, and the blueish bit blends into the background.

Also, the logo should always be at the top of the page. I also think that the sign in bit and all the user buttons should be at the top as well. (If it were up to me, I'd also have the series list on a completely seperate page, but that is Kane's decission.)

Thats all I can think of now, also, I'd like to see a lot more concept art from everybody, especially for the logo/header. Hand drawn, photoshop, MSpaint, anything is fine, what we need most right now is ideas.

I'm going to go and play around in photoshop in a minute, maybe someone should start a new thread for logo/header design ideas.

    EDIT:
    Looking at this page:
    vBulletin Manual - StyleVars
Things look so much better with zero cell spacing.

I came up with a background. Tell me what you think

I just picked random dimensions really... I figure the forum can be justified to the right and the top (above luffy's sword) will hold the logo and all the forum tools like the User CP and Quick Links. I'll work on a mock up of what I mean.

Problem is, the artwork takes up fuck tons of space. The posts should be the center of attention, not the background. The art is nice (maybe a bit too masculine IMO), but the fact that it shifts the forum over is a big no no. Having to look right to read posts, I think would piss a lot of people off, also those with low resoultions would really suffer if you have large art and then use whatever (little) space is left over for the forum (ad it would especially suck if you are forced to use a library computer with a fixed 800x600 resolution).
I was once taught in school (yeah I know, you would never have guessed that I got an education, lol) that "a web site that draws attention away from the content, is a bad web site". No offense steal, it looks good, but its really impractical.

Also, the forum itself shouldn't be fixed at 800px, the forum needs to expand or contract to fit different resolutions or to accomodate large images.

You also have to consider load times, sure with ADSL connections, its not so important, but large images will take time and consume bandwidth, while an 8x8 pixel image that is just tiled, is a lot faster and takes very little bandwidth.

Anyway, I'm sure you're all sick of me shooting down your ideas, so let me put a few of my own in the firing line.

First of all, a couple of logo designs, these aren't final designs, they're just an idea.
    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r.../Logo1copy.png
    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...aile/Logo2.png
    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...elcometoST.jpg
    Font is Embassy.

Okay, so sky is cliché, but I still like it when its done well.

Next is just some quick ideas of how the forum might look (nowhere near good enough, but you get the idea), and also some idea for colour schemes.
    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...e/web1copy.png
    http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...metoSTcopy.png
There is also the mod control pannel which has an OK colour scheme (if a bit dark and dull), although I wouldn't use blue as a backing for posts, maybe just for the background.
The "mod porn forum" is an old joke for those who don't know, its the only full screenshot I had that I could use.

Also, what about a mascot? Do we need one?

Finally, here is a folder of a load of images I have on my computer, that I grabbed and put into a folder as refference material or stuff that I just thought might look good on a website or had good colours. If I had to choose a mascot, it would either be potemayo or a character from Aria.

When I made it I looked at about four sites for reference, ActOneArt, MangaHelpers, NarutoFan, and WM-Studios. Kane said he liked MH so I went with their setup mostly, which is a bg image (2000x1500), ~500kb and centered [MangaHelpers]. I dunno if theres a way to make the image scale with the resolution of the computers so i may take all the images and shrink them down to a total height of ~1000 pixels (sucks for whoever on 800x600, but lets not cater to the minority). The forum being centered is far more likely than it being on the right, that was just because I hadn't done anything with the left side of the image (hence the cutoff). Either way its not like its that far right to look, all together its probably 200 pixels or so, no big deal.

Theres also the way of AOA which has one solid bg color and an image on top of the bg on the top right, the forum is transparent.

    [Their background image]

Which is always a good style. Making the board translucent on a pale bg and just have a much smaller image in the corner. Then the board can stretch all the way across the full resolution of the screen and still have a nice (smaller) image. I can't do that in PS right now since I can't for the life of me remember what the font is on the default skin of VB.

As for drawing attention away... I doubt anyone will be forgoing posting or downloading just to look at the background. Its nice but its not that nice.

Default skin of VB: either Tahoma, Arial, Verdana. No?

Thats a good idea, that way the forum size is not set or limited by the background image. My only concern would be that you would have to be carfull that text didn't get lost in the background image.
