Thread: New poster of artwork. Treat me as you will. :D

'Lo everyone,

I'm an absolutely brand new poster here in these forums, even though I've been around, downloading stuff for a while now. I've only just recently decided to peek into the forums.

Well, I'll introduce myself. I go by a few names, Tomaki in most places. I've been around various art forums/sites, and oekaki boards, but lately (which is to say... the last couple years...) it's gotten a bit dull. The quality of critiques and enthusiasm has really fallen which has caused a stagnant air to engulf my motivation. T_T Needless to say, I decided to branch out and get myself a little more exposure, and hopefully gain some new perspectives and advice, as well as gain some interesting people to talk to. :3

And here I shall post a few pieces of my art, starting with the oldest in my "recent pile" and ending with the newest.

Media: Copic multiliners and colored pencils
His hand bugs me. Otherwise I enjoy it. Likely cause it's Onishi, xD cause he amuses me. This is one of the very few real media pictures I've got (besides pencil sketches). I've never really been comfortable with pen and colored pencil. :< I drew it when my Tablet was all but broken down and during my trip to A-kon. XD

Ara, another character of mine. This wont be a surprise after a while, I'm a character artist. xD The only thing that bothers me anymore about this picture is that there's no background. Still. I've gotten over everything else.

One of my few pieces that isn't supposed to have a background due to future plans of it's use. ._. Which isn't impressive in the least. The character is Daron, who belongs to mah buddy Jackie.

This is my first serious oekaki drawing in years. xD; For serious. This is Tohma, but dont let the provocative look fool you. My constant yet well managed urge to draw sexy looks gave way to this result. Technically he's supposed to be about as provocative as a rock.

Media used: Intuos2 tablet, Deleter comicworks (lineart), Painter 7 (colors), Photoshop7 (waves in the background). ... or at least I think that's how it worked out. xD
It's Onishi again. This time with his horns and markings/tattoos. Deleter is a wonderful program for line art since it IS made for manga making. The pen tool moves very smoothly and it's great at 600 dpi.

I rarely draw girls.. but it's a lot of fun. XD It's so incredibly different anatomically from all the guy's I draw. That's why I like it so much I think. XD
Also I think I draw better when I challenge myself... :< I think this came out better than the last few pictures I've done.

Anyway, in the future I hope to bring you backgrounds. No matter how crappy they may be in the beginning, I really need to stop ignoring them. T_T; Otherwise my days as an amature mangaka are doomed, no? XD Well I'll take all the advice I can get.
Also I'll post up a few of my more dynamic pictures sometime, I'm sure just looking at random characters just standing/sitting there will get boring after a while. xD I'll make time to knock one out.

Ohh, nice style. Great use of mixed media as well. The first thing I noticed was the hands, you need to work on those, but I guess you already knew that? In anycase they're either too big or drawn weirdly (I hate telling people to work on their hands, because I have trouble drawing them too).

Anyway, you draw great poses, your anatomy is good and colouring is deep. If I had to offer one last piece of advice, it would be stay away from tif files on the internet. Just use JPEGs (it's really all their good for), just use tifs if you wanna print something out (preferably in CMYK). Good job

Actually, I'd say png is a bit better than JPEGs on the internet. But then it depends on what you are using them for, but I find png quality stays higher as you shrink images or change them.

Other wise you have great colors and use of shading and the only thing is that sometimes you hands are a bit awkward and over large.

Yes.. Drawing hands is a pain but I reeeally enjoy it anyway. I'm always trying to work out weird things with them and push my limit. That's probably why they end up lookin kind of funny. xD

Thank you so much. ^^ I'm very happy to hear about my coloring lately. I know I still have more work to do on it, but It was definitely one of my weaker points in the past.

As for tifs, XD; I didn't even know they did that on the net. But I'll be sure to stay away from them. Thanks. I'll upload a different version soon. Though I'm afraid the pretty links that were bestowed upon me will disappear if I try to do it just yet. D:

Why is this? You should use either www.photobucket.com or www.imageshack.us. Ithink everybody agrees that these are the best image hosting sites.

i must say the first one looks nothing like the second two, i guess the media really does matter. the second and third look very professoinal with excellent anatomical correctness and good lighting effects. i thought they were done by Tite Kubo for a second.... nice job.

Tetnubis - Well I was afraid because if I edit my post I might knock out the links cause I'm still under the 10 post limit. XD; I cant post links myself, yet. I dont think there's a problem with my image hosting on this side. But if there are problems with viewing the pictures I can change it. Do let me know.

StealDragon - Oddly enough, the media matters a LOT. I think I may have adapted to the two different media in different ways. Also, the difference between a 9x12 tablet at 600 dpi vs. an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of computer paper is like day and night, space wise. xD Thank you very much for your compliments. I've never been compared to Kubo Tite before, to my knowing, but I can see where you would think that. XD

When people start their posts with lines like: "Treat me as you will..." or "I know my art sucks... but say something anyways..." you always certainly know that they're gonna be some kick-ass Pro trying to be modest.

I cannot give you much critique because I'm below your level. "Friggin Damn Awesome and I'm bloody jealous" is all that comes to mind. Other than that... you sure had me fooled with the first pic (the hand size was off), only to follow up with some extremely well done art with the rest. Kinda like a left followed by a right hook. Well done.

Ok. a piece of advice you WILL benefit from (and I grudgingly hand it to you...) If you start working will (Adobe) Illustrator, you will become one hell of an artist to be reckoned with. I'm basically giving you the potion to immortality here but... what the hell. With Illustrator you won't need to worry about what resolution you draw your characters in. After you've learned all the basics of Illustrator, the next thing to master (after the pen tool) is creating a library of your own brushes so that you can get the same varied line effect you'd get from brushes in Photoshop. If none of this makes sense to you now, it will when you start learning it.

I've gone this far for you now... you must walk the rest of the way!
