I love debating with people who are well-educated on a topic and have well-thought-out arguments. Debating is a passionate and enjoyable activity and there is nothing wrong with it. When people resort to personal insults, it's not debating. However, when a person gives an insulting point of view, or a response that clearly has no basis, thought, or fact to it, they should expect to have attention called to those truths. When random people begin to flame or even post without knowing the entire situation, it does lead to attacks and a general lowering of the standards for that debate.

If people would bother to learn about the subject and give an educated yet opinionated but polite response, we'd all be happy. It's perfectly fine to disagree, and it's also okay to argue, but it's not okay to just think you can step into a debate and say anything.

I agree entirely with Digital_Eon. That's the whole purpose of discussions, in my eyes, to share an educated, or at least informed, opinion. If I dont know anything about the topic, I tend to just read the other posts and not post anything myself. I'd be out of my league in some discussions.

As for Cold-NiTe...I don't even know how to go about approaching this one. I think it's sad, that people are treated like that. I also view the underlined and bolded parts of your response, and the part about not assuming things as the most important (for me). Of course, I'm caucasian and not part of a visible minority, so I'm happy when people ask me about my family's background. They usually don't ask stupid questions, so being in a situation like that hasn't really come up for me. I've never been on the receiving end, and I really hope I've never been on the other end, either.

It's a topic I try not to bring up. If the other person does, then I love learning anything and everything they have to tell me, because I'm really interested in that kind of thing. Different cultures, religions, and so forth. But I just never know how to broach the subject in a way that's not offensive, unless I already know where the person is from and can just ask them what it's like there (I mean someone who's travelling, in this case). But I think your approach is a good one, Cold-NiTe.

I'm split on this issue. While I love an intelligent debate from which I can garner knowledge from, I equally love brainless image macro wars.

There are a LOT of sensitive topics in this forum.
Many people are intellectual to argue them out and come to understanding with each other, but it leaves all other people who can't come to an understanding scarred and deeply hurt.
Philosophy, religion, politics, culture, even technological advancement, they all can cause very intense conflicts because they are very complex issues without a clear right or wrong. However, many people insist on their beliefs and defend them to tooth and nail, hurting others in the process. Pain when given to humans allow them a chance to fix flaws, but often times a flaw is fixed, but other flaws replace it. In our arguements, we often times destroy and fix other people's beliefs but do not pay attention to the side-effects that show up.

Freedom of speech is a very wonderful thing if you have the fortitude to take verbal abuse from others. If you don't, freedom of speech may be the cause of your demise. Free countries can be very dangerous.

Yet no one interested in having an actual one?
And people shouldn't be hurt by what they hear in an arguement. It's the interent, it isn't to be trusted. Agree to disagree and move on. If you can't, stay out of the arguement.

lol, youre such a grammar nazi... but, I absolutely agree with you. Its just that youre always the first one to point it out. (now im all self-concious. this isnt a flame.)

I feel like, im some ways, I'm responsible for this thread. While I am not the exclusive poster of sensitive threads, I certainly have more than my fair share of them. Now, I'm of the opinion that I do not do so in an insensitive way, and am always careful never to post my view until after some other people have responded. I feel like threads of this nature of inquiry can be valuable and interesting. I know that I, personally, have benefitted from all of you posting your view points, because I approach these topics with an open mind that is willing to change how I feel about a particular subject. But I see what youre saying penta. These threads walk a thin line between insensitivity and intellectual value. I don't feel like I am personally dogmatic about my beliefs (although perhaps I'm not the best judge of this), and that allows me to partake in these discussions without offending others(on purpose/deliberately).

When we discuss these things, we break down mental blocks and rebuild them. Its like straining our intellectual muscle. If you get offended at a particular comment, take a step back. Try to introspectively analyze why you had that response! Maybe you will find that you were entirely justified, but keep in mind that you are not omniscient. We are products of our environments, and our nature is not static. You might be surprised at what you see in yourself when you at yourself under this light.

So in the end, I apologize if threads I have made offend you. But these threads hold certain value to us as people. And I will not forsake that to spare someones feelings, because each and every time we enter this forum, we choose which threads we participate in. As long as even one person here is willing to debate and learn with me, I feel like these threads have purpose.

    Thanks, and I'm sorry.
