Maybe you just need to let them know you're not interested, but it's perfectly okay to talk to them. People can have friends of the opposite gender even when they're straight and remain friends. It's not like having a gay friend will automatically make you susceptible to come-ons.

Just try talking a bit more. It's okay if you do end up hating them, though, because you'll have tried. ^^

Can a person be homophobic and tolerant of gay people at the same time?

Penta, read my earlier post. Yes they can. Tolerance is thinking something is wrong, but not letting that affect how you love them as an idividual, which is where I stand on homosexuality, I see it as a sin, but no worse than any other sin.

Why do you see it as a sin, if I may ask? By what definitions?

The Bible says it is a sin. Period.

So all sins are equal by nature? Being too lazy to do your homework is the same severity destruction of entire cultures, communities and nations for material gain?

Although I question how wrong homosexuality is, because I can see that as less competition for a prize. (not that women are objects or animals or anything inferior to men)

Yes, all sins are equally damning in the eyes of God. Imperfection is still imperfection. And sloth is a very serious sin, actually.

    Tell me where.

The closest I can think of is the fact that homosexuality was involved in the Sodom and Gomorrah story. Might I add that rape was implied too, and it was only stated that the actions of the cities in GENERAL were sinful?

    And bestiality was implied...

    Homosexuality as a sin:
    Leviticus 18:22-24
    Jeremiah 17:5
    Leviticus 20:13
    Romans 1:26-27
    1 Corinthians 6:9
    1 Timothy 1:9-10
    1 Kings 14:24
    1 Kings 22:44, 46
    Deuteronomy 20:5
    Deuteronomy 23:17

There are many more, if you would like me to give more...

I have gay friends and work with gays, and do not treat them any different, or feel any different about them than anyone else. I just have a healthy love of keeping my butthole the same size as it is now, and I think that most males have an ingrained aversion to that practice. Homophobia is nothing to be ashamed of, when not taken to extremes, and when you don't allow it to influence your judgements on the individuals.

Maybe because the word itself implies prejudice and intolerance?

The word implies prejudice, but as long as you do not allow your base fears and desires take hold of you, I do not see why an "irrational fear," once faced and conquered(as mine has), should have any effect on your life and how you interact with those individuals.
