they were just praying to the wrong god; however, I am sure Eris wouldn't have done anything anyways if she had heard thier prayers... :P

Well, those were all ritualized prayers. The people were given written prayers to pray, not just spontaneously praying from their heart.
I wouldn't diss prayer.
Here, I'll give you a personal example of what just happened to me.
Every year, I go to a church retreat. Last year's church retreat I gave a testimony about my non-Christian friend. At the end of the testimony, I was pretty much soaking in tears. So, my Christian friends and I gathered together and for about half an hour we were praying for my friend to accept Christ.
And guess what?
Out of the random-blue, the friend I prayed for last year decided to come to our church retreat this year. There's hope for him yet to believe in Christ. =D
coincidence? or is this an answering of a prayer?
I know that prayer can heal. I knew a guy that went to the doctor one day, and found out he had stage four cancer. It was in his spine, liver, pancreas, lungs, and intestines. They gave him a month to live. No treatment possible. I, and all my church, prayed for him. He just kept living. After one month, he went to the doctor, and found out that the cancer was still there, but that it hadn't grown at all. After two months, he went back, and found out that it was completely gone.
A year later, he got stage four cancer again. Lungs, liver, and intestine. We prayed again, and within four months he got better. The only side effect of the cancer is that he can't walk well now, after the cancer in his spine. Prayer can be a powerful thing, regardless of what that study showed.
cool article, but it's not saying much. neither are you. unless, you're trying to say nothing, then you're saying something -- hence me being wrong. this ones up in the air, make of it what you want.
edit: let me add that if you were serious about the "we all saw this coming" BEFORE the study results came out, then i have to question the open/bias aspects of your position (not to mention everything else that comes with that; future trust issues, etc...) but i'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you're only purpose for the topic title was to attract people (you had my curiosity bubbling)
I wish I had stories to share off the top of my head...
Pray for prevention of heart disease, not a cure! Huzzah!

Here's another.
Woman (not in my church) has cancer. She was fated to die really soon... like a month or so. She refused all medicine.
All she had was prayer. She lived for 2 more years. =D
amazing, eh? =D
