    Wait,I thought that the freeing African American slaves wasn't the main reason.And they really didn't free any,the slave states that stayed with the Union got to keep their slaves

    Correct. The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the South(which the Union didn't control) but kept the slaves in the Northern states slaves. It was just a political move. The war was part because of economics, part because of different social conflicts, but mostly because the South wanted to be seperate from the North, and the North didn't want that.
