Carrying katanas, pish tush. Katanas take too long to draw unless you practise, and I have better things to do with my time. They are good showpieces, though.

Martial arts is helpful, but you can't do pure martial arts and hope to pwn. These disciplines are more for honing concentration and such as well as physical prowess than actually fighting. So in the long run, unless you're a dedicated practitioner, it's not that helpful. After all, not many people know the kata that stops a twelve-gauge shotgun at ten meters. A knife is always good as a backup when the jumping and kicking and martial shouting doesn't work, because you can count on a knife to spill the guy's blood for you.
    1. Yeah, I have a nice set of three throwing knives in a light sheath that straps on whereever necessary. Theyre US Ranger surplus, so the weight is quite good (though not exactly perfect).

    2. I take Iado, which is the art of the quick draw for katanas. I do not have the problem that you state in your second point, though I see how it can be an issue for the untrained.

    3. I disagree. Theres really no other way to say it. I guess youre right in that you do have to be a dedicated practitioner, but I think this is universally true of most things.

    1. Lucky! I always wanted to try my hand at throwing knives, but I could never find a knife that could be thrown.

    2. You seem to be a martial arts lover. I would take some kind of martial art, but I can't find any good dojos in Shanghai, nor do I have the time. I would love to go study at the Shaolin temple for a year before college though.

    3. Pure martial arts is not conducive to street fighting. The moves all have a lot of curls and flourishes on them. I find it best to just keep both feet on the ground, get my fists up, and use my head, without all the stuff they teach you in martial arts. However, that's just the opinion of an undisciplined brawler . I'm not saying that it's useless, just that not all of it is useful in the situation of fighting a thug on the street. It's the same reason fencing is different from swordfighting.
Either this man is dead or my watch has stopped.

well, I think your observation depends on the style. For something like Karate or Tai Quan Do, then yes, brawling is a different game. Something like aikido that is completely defensive is less susceptible to the flaws you point out.
