Actually, we do have the tech to build this system. The problem with the laser is not efficiency, though that is a problem, and a source of this problem, but power. It takes a rather large amount of power to vaporize an object of any size using a laser because the way most lasers are created use up a rather large percentage of energy in getting the light to be coherant.

Though, one method of solving that is using X-ray lasers. The problem with these though, is that they're one shots. The way they work is by detonating a hard-rad nuke inside of a shell of mirrors, which will redirect the X-ray wavelengths into a coherant beam, before being destroyed by shockwave, being vaporized, whatever. Output is incredibly powerful, probably enough to vaporize a few dozen feet of lead. Or drill through a mountain.

Another option is the trusty Maser. This is like a laser, except it operates in the microwave frequencys, and it creates the beam by exicting a specialy created chemical soup, crystal, something. The electrons bounce way up in their little orbitals, and when they drop back to a lower level, they realize a shitton of high-energy microwaves. Problem with this one is that it's an all around bitch to utilize. And, it's power hungry. But, it has a very, very, high output.

I can see problems with this already, anyone else see how this would "accidently" damage the planet even more?

besides i believe they were trying to create a hurricane blaster as they stated using the same methods (blasting from outerspace)

Do you all research this information pre-emptive to posting? Or do you all just posses an infinite knowledge?

Anyway, the development of such an advanced weapons system would cause the world to take an even great disliking to the U.S., some out of jealousy, others because their ignorant hate of of America and Americans. I live in canada, and the ignorant hate of americans that Canadians posses shames me to no end. At least the development of this system would prove once and for all Americans are not as unintelligible as it is internationaly believed.

(i do not know what it is about you that closes and opens; only something in me understands the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses) nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands.

This has got to be one of the most idiotic, hate mongering statements I have ever seen. First you say that there are children starving in other countries, and that the US should get involved and do more to alleviate their sufferings, then you get mad at the US for getting involved in other countries, in the Middle East. Pick a point and stick to it, or just shut up. I am not saying I am for the War in Iraq and our continued presence there, in fact I am against it. I am a staunch conservative, and voted for Bush, because I support the majority, not all, of his policies. I supported Bush more before September 11, when he was pushing for the US to be more isolationist. Whenever we get involved with another country, no matter what our intentions, we take flak from it from ignorant imbeciles like yourself. I say we should, as George Washington put it, "It is our true policy to steer clear of entangling alliances with any portion of the foreign world." While I say that, on the other hand, while "entangling alliances" gave us fiascos like Korea and Vietnam, it also gave us small victories such as Iraq, where we ended a horrible regime and helped, as you put it, "starving children in {that} countr{y}." While I don't agree with the war in Iraq, I agree with you even less, and your wish that innocent people in my country should die from natural disasters only makes you seem more hypocritical. And while we have made spme aggressive acts, which I don't happen to agree with, many other countries have made just as aggressive acts in the past, you probably can't name one country with bloodless hands. Really, as I have learned, there are times when it is better not to speak, and in your case, this was one of those times.
