    Default Question...

    Hey everyone,

Since I am not into the whole anime online scene, I am not sure how and why things operate. Some things are obvious, while others just remain confusing to me.

My main question is this, why would a scanlating group not want a site to host their files? Keeping credits, linking to the group, and making no profit what so ever, why wouldn't they want you to host the files on your own server to offer for download or online viewing? Isn't the whole purpose of scanlating mangas to give to the public? Personally, if I were part of a scanlating group, I would be more than thrilled if a site asked for permission to host my releases. Doesn't it get the group more known and the manga they worked so hard to scanlate for us out to the public?

I ask this because I recently talked to a leader of a scanlating group. I asked him if it was cool if I hosted some of the titles they scanlated for public online reading. I, myself and the site, would in no way take credit or make any profit from it. In fact, I said I would keep all credits and post their link under each page when viewing a manga they translated. He said no, and was pretty rude about it. He told me that I should scan and translate the materials myself instead of using other people's work. What the hell kind of sense does that make?

Anyways, if anyone could lend some light on this subject, I would be more than appreciative.

... Also, I just read a topic on StopTazmo, in one of the other forums. A chick was asking ST to stop sharing some manga, because their group released it. She also said they wouldn't release the next chapter/volume until it was removed from this site? To me, that's just retarded, but then again, I might be missing something. ><

A lot of scanlation groups have been scanlating mangas that are licensed. When a manga is licensed.... it's technically not legal to scanlate that manga. In theory, if the authorities cared enough, a scanlation group can get in trouble for mass producing that manga.

Thus, some scanlation groups wants to keep their scans on a more down-low kind of status. They want to restrict all downloads in an IRC room.

Other scanlation groups only want people going to IRC to download because they want to see who is getting their downloads, how many are appreciating their work, ect. It's more fun watching someone come directly to you for a particular manga scanlation.

My manga group... doesn't really care that much. We like people using our stuff and don't have much of a problem with it =P

IRC is their way of hiding from authorities. Put a download site on the web, and you're asking for unwanted attention.

Look at what happened to Boxtorrents. Who the hell wants to get raped like they did.

    Dear StopTazmo,
On a related question to what Cold-Nite said, I noticed something wierd last night. Last night, I noticed around 7 p.m. EST that their was a strange amount of activity on the forums. I noticed that all the topics except chit chat and download requests had less than 10 people viewing. Chit Chat and Download Requests, however, each had over 650 people viewing them, and at one point the Download Requests section had over 900. This seemed odd, because the posting activity was almost nonexistent around that time, so I couldn't see what was luring people in. Is this the kind of problems Boxtorrents have, I was unable to register for Boxtorrents, so never bothered to check. I have heard of DDOS attacks several times on these forums, and was wondering if this is what that was, an effort to crash the site, or if it was merely an odd occurrence. Thanks for reading this, gotta go to church, bye!

    Sincerely,
    Jakko

P.S. - Am I following the Gentleman's Code of writing well enough, as set forth by the great and mysterious inuboy86?

    Dear Jakko1234,

Actually, I was referring to the incident in which Boxtorrents got a bunch of Cease and Desist orders from like 3 or 4 different U.S. companies asking them to stop distributing licensed anime. The manga we read is also mostly licensed. So the same can happen to them.

On the topic of what you were speaking of, that sounds somewhat like a DDOS but it wouldn't require users to register with the forums. They'd just have a botnet up and then have several hundred 'bots' start making tons of requests of the server causing it to lock up and then taking it down. But there have been websites that were taken down by large groups of people DDOSing instead of bots.

    Sincerely,
    Cold-NiTe

P.S. You've done well Jakko, Inuboy86 would be proud.

    Dear Cold-NiTe,

I noticed the same strange phenomenon and I would just like to ask if this would happen again if there was, in fact, an attempt to crash the site.

    Sincerely,

    Dearest 98abaile,

Why is it that you are so averse to the proper etiquette of forum posting. Could it be that you are not, in fact, a Gentleman?
