I wonder how many of you have actually studied the actual history of samurai. Its not nearly so noble as we all believe. Its really interesting this mythos we've created around the exotic, Eastern samurai. I'm taking a course right now on th history of samurai, which goes into great depth studying what we actually know about samurai versus what our preconceptions are and where they came from.

it would not have been uncommon to raze an entire village to the ground, killing women and children in the blaze. Sneak attacks were preferred, for the most part. Now this is not to say there was no honor, because that would not be true, but I'm just bringing up the side we are not usually familiar with.

More commonly known is the fact that almost all samurai followed 'The Way of the Bow and Horse.' Thats right folks, a samurai would not be running around on a battlefield with a huge sword, contrary to our image.

Remember how Oda Nobunaga use musketeers to beat other daimyo
and remember how knights would easily be slaughtered by ranged gunpowder weaponries...

Yes I know alot of them rode horses,but alot of them were also foot soldiers.
I know they were human,but have you ever heard of the 47 ronin?Not only did they avenge their lords death but afterwards turned themselves in and commited seppeku(think thats how you spell it).Sure the samurai razed villages and other stuff.But,if they were brought to a great amount of shame they would be given the choice of Hara Kiri. Who would commit suicide just for having shame?Not knights.

As for beserkers,some historians are now saying that the beserkers may have been insane people,or people who took some kind of drug or somethign to make them go beserk,plus most of them would go into battle wearing little to nothing.Talk about indecency.

Seriously though, I shall recount one of my favorite facts about a berseker holding a bridge.

One bersker held a bridge against an entire army, untill he eventually died from blood loss. He cut down a few hundrede foot soldiers, and, when he was eventually examined, he had numerus arrows piercing his entire body, and a good deal of internal organs, had most of his muscles severed, had numerus shattered bones, and only died from loss of blood.

The only way to take out a true berseker of old was to do lethal damage to the brain, heart, or completely sever his muscles. Poison only rarely worked because of their extreme metabolisms and the incredible amount of adrenaline that was pumping through thier veins and arteries.

Also, an interesting factoid, adrenaline is more toxic than cyanide.
It is also capable of boosting a human's strength 50 fold, letting a human being actually lift weights of thousands of pounds. This of course, comes with the side-effect that your heart will most likely explode.

Indeed.

That berserker reminds me of Hurin from the Silmarillion. As the sole survivor of the rearguard he slew 70 trolls covering the retreat of Turgon to Gondolin over the bridge. Maybe Hurin was based off him. Tolkien did love Norse and Germainic mythology
