Thread: Drawing concepts from ideas

Half term is coming up, and I'd like to draw a few character concepts (possibly weapons and maybe monsters too). The aim of this thread is too basically;

Create a character and I'll draw it.

First off. Be descriptive and creative, if you want to leave something up to my imagination then do so, the more detail you give the more the character will look like how you think it would. If you don't include something I will just draw it how I see fit, so if it's something important remember to include it!

Things to include would be things like:
Eyes, eye size, hair, face, features on face (tattoo's, scars earrings lipstick etc). Body size (small, fat, wide, tall, lanky, normal, slim etc), clothes, what are they wearing, be descriptive about it if you want too.

Weapons or accessories, what do they look like, where do they go (left hand, right hand, floating in the air etc). Otherwise if you say something like Icicle, or Tennis Racket I'll try my best to make up a weapon.

Pose, if you don't specify then I'll make something up.

Style, since I'm in the middle of developing my style I tend to bounce around when it comes too it. If you have a specific style you want me to draw in include a good pic of the style. Simply naming what anime/manga it comes from isn't enough since I'm too lazy to look it up/download it if I don't know what it is.

Secondly. I'm drawing this roughly with pencils, I may or may not go over it with ink quickly in photoshop. I won't add colour to most of them, if I do it'll only be flat colours.

Thirdly. I'm not that fast of a drawer, I can draw roughly quite quickly but I like to be a little thorough. I will do 1-3 requests at a time so be patient.

Fourthly. Your characters are your own. I will not in no way use your characters for anything other then my own amusement (take that how you will). This is practice for me for when I get older, I think it's good to create and visualize someone else's words to create a picture.

Lastly, have fun, I hope someone will find this interesting enough to try, I am a good drawer, but I'm looking to get better. Criticisms are welcome but not necessary, it is rough after all so only crit if you want too.

Also, I wasn't sure if this was the right place to put this topic, it's pretty broad so if you feel it needs to be moved then feel free to do so.

I've had a charecther design floating around in my head for awhile now, and it seems it might be brought to life here.

If you'll give me a bit, I'll make a detailed desc of her.

eyes: green, and large. think more feminine
hair: silvery-blonde, kinda wild yet tame, similar to a typical anime protagonist. not long, not overly short.
face: boyish, no scars (determined? if there is such a look)
body size: lean but strong, appearing more normal. not jacked, not like a beanstalk.
clothing: hakama/gi black on top and bottom. the gi is made of a semi-stiff canvas-ey cloth, the hakama is pleated and wavy. underneath the gi is an undershirt type of gi, made of silk, and white. it essentially borders the gi by about an inch on all of its edges(sleeve, chest, neck). On the back of the gi is a small white crest of a kite shield with a pheonix in the center (its located pretty much directly between the shoulder blades, the crest being 5 inches or so in height).

weapons: two katanas that are sheathed in an X pattern at the small of his back. there is a two-hooped black cloth thong that keeps the swords/sheathes attached to the back of the hakama. They are very basic katanas, with an unassuming black sheath. While crafted masterfully, the only distinguishing mark is a small etching of a few characters just above the tang.

Pose: a shot from behind, his head looking to the left so that we can see the profile of his face, partially hidden behind his hair. a strong wind blows from the right, causing his hair and hakama to billow to the left. one hand is reaching back and grasping the right hilt, not drawn, the other hand is at his left side, slightly away from the body. his pinky and pointer fingers are outstretched normally, his middle and ring finger are crossed. when his arm is hanging down like that, a braided cloth bracelet is apparent, with a tying string that hangs down slightly and has a few small beads attached to it. I picture a small dust cloud curling up from the wind, carrying a few leaves spiralling with it.

Style: I have always been amazed with Ken Akamatsu's ability to draw. So, if youve read Mahou Sensei Negima (which you should), then anything in that style is amazing. I'm also impressed with the art in DNAngel in the same way. (im picking more mainstream options). If you dont recognize either of these, then just do it however you want. I think I prefer it not in color, and I might even like it if it has a gritty sketch-like feel to it. (kinda like how FLCL has its appeal).

Anyway, take your time, I'm not in a rush. If you dont want to draw him, then just PM me and let me know; thats quite alright. If you have any questions, post em here or PM me. Anything works.

Quite a challenging brief for a rough sketch. I'm quite pleased with the pose, although the Hakama looks weird. The left arm was hard too, I just did it slightly holding the katana's end cause well, it kinda fit haha. Hope you like it.

OK, let's do this. If you don't want to draw it, I don't blame you, but I'm curious to see how you would choose to render this.


Style: Make it like Miura & Studio Gaga's work. Berserk look to it.
eyes: right eye is shut, look of extreme pain or suffering in the left. Directed towards the 'camera'. His eyes are small, like most eyes in Miura's drawings.
hair: bald, veins throbbing on the forehead
bodysize: lean, formerly muscular, now degraded and obviously unhealthy
perspective: picture is taken from the front, subject is on the groung crawling towards the 'camera', with his head being the closes part of him, left arm is up reaching towards the 'camera' but not past the head yet, palms are open, right arm is twisted behind back, obviously broken.
clothing: no shirt, chest is bare but only the upper half is seen as the rest of him is on the ground. Pants are thick black wooly and plain material. Feet are also bare and look to be in terrible condition.
Mouth: agape, crying out.
Nose: roman, bruised and bleeding.
Weapons: Subject is obviously unarmed. However protruding from his back is a spear, the blade of which can't be seen but the rest of it is just plain wood with no decoration but of a darker wood.

Art style: Blame!

hair: brown and raven black

Face: slim, slightly femine, metal looking slices covering small parts of face, extremely cold look on face.

Body: Slim, with well muscled proportions.

Clothing and items: black flak jacket, covering a flowing metallic shell armor. Carrying a black helmet under arm, black visor, extremly advanced look. In left hand is a small ball, vacuum black, with glowing lines of apple blue.

weapons: Strapped across her back is a large and bulky, yet extremly deadly and advanced looking sniper-esque rifle

Position: Seen from an over head view angled on her right side. In front of her is a hovering vehicle reminiscent of a wipeout ship, with it's cockpit open.

Background: a white floor with directional stripes on the floor.

If you don't feel up to drawing this, feel free to modify it to your liking.
Also, if you like the charecther, your free to use her in whatever you like.
She is from a universe I am creating, entitled "Everlasting Damascus".

Quite please about this one. Just to explain a little, I felt I couldn't get the position you wanted effectively while including the ship and the detail on the clothes. So I draw a pose that's a little different (the figure is from the left so you can't see the right arm that much) and had to change the position of the visor to hanging off her arm. I did add a little sketch of what it would look like potrait though. Hope you like it.

Also, Cold Nite, if you could include a pic of Miura & Studio Gaga's work it would help, or just an anime/whatever they've done. If you can't that's ok, i'll just try do it Berserk style.
