    Default Muhammad cartoons controversy

What is your opinion on the Mahammad caricature controversy...

If you don't know what I'm talking about I also added a link to the latest of the events...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jylland...ns_controversy
    *NOTE*
You shouldn't blame the Danish people or government. The Danish people and the Danish government haven’t done anything wrong. The only people in Denmark who have done anything out rightly incorrect would be the newspaper Jyllands –Posten, which printed the articles, but after all of the controversy they apologized.

Then the Muslim people asked for the Danish government to apologize, this is silly, because the Danish government had nothing to do with the article.

The Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen said, "The government refuses to apologize because the government does not control the media or a newspaper outlet; that would be in violation of the freedom of speech".

This means that the Danish government has nothing to do with what the media says, and that the Danish government is not liable for anything any individual newspaper would say.

Also the reaction to the caricatures was way overblown, and hides the bigger issue.

Let's try this again. Don't be a douche when you argue.

"Fuck Islam. Fuck Muhammad. Fuck Religion"
-the words of a douchebag and the reason the thread was cleaned.

I personally think this whole thing is wrong. Denmark should have apologized directly for it. There are limits to freedom of speech. You don't see news papers making cartoons about issues that are touchy. See any editorial cartoons about 9/11? Not to mention you don't see pornographic editorial comics.

Here is an interesting response to the Muhammad controversy

Nothing good is going to come out of this really.

you live in NYC there were tons of editorial cartoons about 9/11 and silly comics satirizing porn and some of issues that made the news.

While the danish newspaper were quite rude by publishing those caricatures, they had every right to do so. What is freedom of speech worth if you're only free to express considerate and politically correct ideas?

However, the newspaper did apologize, and I think that the leaders of the muslim world should accept that apology and take measures to stop the debacle this situation has degenerated into. On the other hand, those leaders probably have more to gain by shifting the people's anger towards the west than resolving the situation peacefully.

    Both sides are wrong.
When you publish something offensive --especially on "touchy" subject -- you can expect somebody to be pissed(and overreacting, pehaps). This is the "reverse" of freedom of speech -- responsibility for it.

But muslims should also know in what world they live and whom they are dealing with. Suing the newspaper, or boycotting Danish goods -- alright. But threatening to kill the author and throwing molotovs in embassies -- goes over the top, and gives them image of savages.

the whole purpose of printing editorials is to shed light into controversial topics or see the issue in a whole different perspective. While I think such censoring is wrong, I do think that they should have done it more tactfully. The way they handled the situation was bad to say the least. Not to mention that the use of him was totally unneccessary.

Does anyone actually know Danish legality? I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that America is one of the only countries in the world that has an established clause defending the freedoms of speech and press. Besides, these institutions were placed there to provide an outlet for CONSTRUCTIVE political and social critique. Those cartoons were needlessly inflammatory and should have been pulled at any of the numerous checks before publication. And if the government can interfere in the press, they should have. Fair and equal treatment is more important than anyone's right to publish racist crap. Don't try to hide behind a 'free' press. Besides, with tensions as high as they've been for the past several years, what idiot would even think the whole thing was a good idea?!

I do not believe that the Danish Government has done anything wrong. The newspaper on the other hand should have been more tactful with the pictures that they chose to publish. They did apologize.

Cor: I thought the article that you posted was quite interesting.. . I wonder what will happen…. Oh, I have read about the nuclear program….

This is going to get really complicated real soon. The actions taken by them will bring interesting responses. Although this will quickly turn into name-calling and mud-slinging if it hasn't already.

I agree with childofcaios. The Danish Government did nothing wrong. So many other things could have been done better though. The newspaper should have been more tactful. The Muslims should have been less violent. The European newspapers shouldn't have bloated the situation...

This is getting to be a real sticky situation.
