Does that sort of training really work? I've heard that all it really does is fuck up your joints.

4 years of Hapkido. I studied for no reason other than all of parent's friends' kids were A grade average freaks who could play at least two music instruments and could kill people twice their sizes and ages with their fists being black belts in karate so they made me compete even though I didn't give a damn. And I hadn't even hit puberty yet...PUBERTY!!

I had two years of Tae-kwon-do, two subsequent years of karate, and now I'm practicing Wu Shu, learning a bit of Wing Chun from my friend from Hong Kong, and taking a really early morning Iaido class, which will be mercifully moved to the evenings.

If you keep to low-mass weights then yes, it works.

I can see it screwing up your joints if it's a heavy weight on your hands, but not if it's on your fore-arm or foot/ankle/shin

It seems there are a few martial art haters who seem to think that because a style does'nt teach you to kill instantly it suks. Well guess what.. thats all of them. Keep in mind that these are forms of ART not combat training. Calling Taekwondo or Judo a sport is not a mark against them. They are sports and arts at the same time. Each one is valuable and has something to offer.
Also keep in mind that even if your school teaches things like gun disarms or knife take aways they are probably quite useless in a self defense situation.

The most baddass of the NHB (no holds barred) and mixed martial arts competitions almost always practice both a style of grappling and ground fighting, AND a style of stand up fighting.

So quit yer 'my style is better than yers" bull snot and go out and cross train. (chances are your instructor already incorporates cross training into the class schedule anyway)
