I dunno, feels like "saving our economy" thing to me. I'm not American but I think it has been long overdue for America to concentrate on saving itself before anyone else.

However, in the case of the squabble between Apple and Samsung...is there really proof of patent violation? I'm not really up to date on this as I don't really dig smartphones.

There is something most likely happening behind the scenes that led Obama to intervene. In political affairs, everything happens for a reason, and typically that reason is some form of payoff.

^ Or it's maybe just qbsenuef said: protectionism. Don't have much info about this case - except the article Red posted - but it still doesn't sound quite right to me...

I'm not a fan of Apple products or the culture they've created as a company but I don't think corruption is a factor in this decision at all. I don't think Apple has the lobbying capability to cause the US Government to veto something especially with such a massive lack of precedent. I do think American protectionism is whats happening here, Samsung has clobbered Apple in the last few years cutting what was their dominance to a much tighter race for smartphone supremacy. Apple is still doing well despite this and will continue to do well but I think its more about the Obama administration needing something tangible to prove that they are focused on American jobs and the success of American companies. However I feel inclined to state it since no one else has, but Samsung is only as successful as they are right now because of an American company - Google. Google cannot be happy about this decision because it affects the penetration of their Android operating system which has propelled Samsung to their current position of leading smartphone market share. One American company wins, one loses. Sammy will survive this, its literally a pinprick in their overall bottom line but I can't even speculate as to what Google is thinking and doing about this.

The real problem here is both Samsung and Apple are patent trolling instead of actually trying to out innovate each other and Obama mentioned this as one of the main reasons he intervened. He's refereeing fairly I think, not taking sides or being paid off.

Basically Samsung used a lot of designs and features that were very similar to Apple's and Apple sued them with pedantry. The argument in tech circles is about whether you can or should patent ideas and not the specific implementation of them. For example Apple apparently has the copywrite for rectangles with round edges.

That's a weird thing to copywrite.

But since they got that patent, so it means it's "patentable"

somehow if Apple wants to use these goodies they have to license Samsung tech or either trade patents

everyone were doing it, and there were lots of no name companies who does nothing but licensing patents they had bought at somebody garage sale.
What Obama need to do is change this patents law probably by abolishing it or either shorten these Tech Patents durations time to 2 or 3 years
or maybe even use Opensource alternative licenses like GNU, Apache or a creative licenses

If Apple is still Apple, they shouldn't have to use the same tech.

I'm pretty sure he'd love to to exactly like that, except its in these companies best interests to fight each other over every little thing. Patent trolling is a thing because it works. They'll probably lobby to water down any attempt to fix the shitty state of patent law in this country.
