one of the credit card companies is planning to introduce a chip that will let you pay with your phone.

i'm thinking in the near future, you'd only ever need to bring your phone with you when you go out. though you'd also be screwed if you ever lose it.
I don't need GPS (I was given a satnav last christmas and I've never used it). I rarely ever need a camera outside and if I do, I plan ahead and bring my SLR. I have never accessed my email on the go and rarely feel the need to. I've already stated that I use my phone for texting. I don't often need a calendar on the go and I carry a note pad to write in for work reasons anyway. Phones make very crappy flash lights and whenever I've been out at night, it's usually in my car which has headlights and a large torch and magnetic work light in the boot.

I would still have to carry my wallet (which contains loyalty cards, debit cards (I don't have a credit card), ID/driver's license and cash) anyway.

Also, I really don't like the idea of carrying around an RFID chip with my bank details, that can be accessed wirelessly.

I'm not to thrilled about the bank thing but I'll respectfully disagree with you 98. I never get lost but google maps is good for pinpointing the location of things exactly, comes in handy going to new neighborhoods or finding tiny dive bars nestled in between other shit. I guess you graduated university already, bc having email on the go is so crucial to me, professors and classmates constantly email me and without that I'd miss out on a ton of assignments. But you're right, I never use the calendar (other than for the date) or notepad... but dont discrimitate, some of these phones have ridiculously bright led lights and make pretty decent flashlights.

Got myself a new Sony Ericsson phone!!!

Nothing fancy, though. Enough to receive/send call & sms, hear music, take photo, etc.

I've just cancelled a mobile broadband package (that was limited to 15GB internet a month) and will soon sign up for a phone package where I get more texts and minutes in a month that I am likely to use in a year, unlimited internet and an HTC Desire HD.

I'm mainly after the internet (so I can go online at work but also tether it to my computer for internet access) but some of the smartphone features have piqued my interest. I like the possibility that I might be able to use it at work as a PDA and to talk to my boss when I can't find him (if they'll let me carry it).
AR seems like a gimick but I look forward to testing it out.
The 3.5mm headphone jack is a cool idea, so I can leave my ipod at home now.

Yeah abaile! No more downloading smaller quality versions of anything!

I've kept the same phone for the last 2 years to make a point. I don't give a fuck what kind of piece of shit is in my pocket so long as it dials out and texts.

It's a samsung Rant. I've had, not only the same model, but the same phone since I first got it. It's all beaten up and scratched and looks like it went through a racoon's mouth. It's nice though. Saved me a lot.

So NO I don't really keep with up with the cell phone trend. Although SONY is coming out with a playstation phone that I am kind of excited about and there's another phone/game station coming out that I forgot the name of. Apparently it's powerful enough to run World of Warcraft over the mobile internet. And powerful enough to run the game too!

Well it maybe powerful enough to run the client, but the massive ping times will make it a pain to play. I'm testing out Guildwars over mobile broadband and my average ping is about 250 (ranging from 90 in unpopulated areas, up to 390 in some [still largely unpopulated] cities).

250 isn't bad. There should be an option to reduce your input lag in any game though. It might cut your fps down though. If your machine is powerful you won't notice it though.
