Well, yea, I would argue it's still fresh. It's the biggest thing that's ever hit so close to home and nothing has replaced it to a lot of ppl up here in the north. Sure, there's some pretty crazy fucked up things in the world like disaster in Haiti... but that's still kinda farrrrrrrrr away and not REALLY affecting us except my pockets a bit.

Its fresh if the war hasnt still been won, the leaders captured, and I can walk to lower manhattan and not still see a giant hole in the ground.

Yeah, that's right, and the knife is still in the wound. Last I heard, the US and NATO are still in Afghanistan and getting blown up weekly. The link between 9/11 and the ongoing military action may be questionable, but I think many people tie the two together at least on an emotional level.

DE brings up a good question--if not now, then when? After the Afghanistan campaign ends? One year after? At some point the healing has to begin and life has to return to some sort of normal.

Edit: At what point would it be okay to build this community center, if ever?

In my opinion if 9 years is considered still fresh then it's going take an entire lifetime before people will be willing to accept this community centre (i.e. when nobody who was alive during 9/11 is still living).

Or they could let go of their prejudice instead. You don't need to "move on" from 9/11 to understand that not all Muslims are terrorists out to get America. It was never not okay to build this community centre. On the site of 9/11? Okay, maybe if that were the case. But it isn't.

One thing that concerns me, this mosque is to me a slap in the face to a country that considers freedom
of worship a 'right'.....you can practice voodoo if you please and cut the head from a chicken and it is
    a 'right'....but I still bristle at the mosque's location.
Islam is the fasting growing 'religion' in the entirety of the world right now, including the USA, one of these
days, maybe sooner than thought a Muslim president???

Not good news for quote, infidels like myself and so many others...

    this is a bad scenario.

Oh dear universe. The center should be built. It was there before the attack, like previously said perhaps not that address, but there non the less. Other states need to stop piggy back riding this issue. Its NYC problem. Also if anyone has visited lower Manhattan as of late there are signs all over the place announcing a prayer service with CHRISTIAN smack in the center and in smaller print another line saying Fight the Mosque. Seriously it isn't the entire religion.
