I can't fault the mother, she works hard, but yeah something needs to be done about this and maybe she doesn't deserve jail time but a precedent needs to be set. If you can't keep your child healthy, you WILL be held responsible... criminally if necessary.

How is it her fault? Yes she should have provided her son with a more nutritionally ballanced diet, but she wasn't exactly forcing the food down his throat. If the kid had half a brain cell and actually gave a damn about himself, he would of said, "gee mon, I don't feel healthy anymore and I sick of eating nothing but cheese burgers. Can I have something else instead?".

Maybe she should have had the good sense to tell the kid to shut up and eat some healthy food instead? Y'know, stop the kid when he's doing something stupid like a parent is supposed to?

On a more general level the sad fact is that not everyone is fit to be a parent. Unfortunately it is impossible to stop the people who are bad parents from having kids, so forcing them to shape up is the only reasonable alternative. Therefore, this is entirely justified, and hopefully a warning example to other idiots who should never have bred in the first place.

I don't think shes a bad parent because her automatically having 3 jobs to take care of her family puts her in my good books. But she should be capable enough to not only provide monetarily for her family but to keep an eye on him and make sure that even if she can only bring home fast food that thats not ALL he eats.
