First of all, the extreme outer pressure (and lack of internal pressure to counteract it) would crack the tube like an industrial jackhammer striking an eggshell. Secondly, even of we assume that there exists some mystery material that could survive the pressure, the tunnel would quickly reach temperatures in excess of 500 degrees celsius (and up to 5000 degrees in the core). So not only would the material have to survive pressure, it would also have to survive extreme temperatures. I suppose you could install cooling, but the power required to do so would certainly be far higher than any other feasible method of transportation on the earth's surface.
I completely agree that the gravity train idea is a joke. It's fun from a theoretical point and nothing else. Moving that amount of rock and the effort to vacuum the tunnel is unreal. As for a frictionless system that doesn't require power...

Anyways, point of interest here, there is no pressure at the dead center of the Earth's core. The opposing forces cancel out and you'd be weightless. Doesn't affect the viability of the train or the temperature issue though.

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

ya know, as our era boasting about genetic modification ex,super crops, super tree, bio weapon,

I am surprised that no one ever think modifying green algae/seaweed/grass or some bacteria that can produce electrical charge.

Its renewable, possibly very cheap and if good enough to eat, why not.(algae/ seaweed)

or modified the damn grass for energy sake. Wonder how far we will go if all investment into nuke weapon/ bio weapon goes into bio engineering.

It have some risk/cost, but what kind of energy dun hv sacrifice with it. Or do the matrix thing, invade a country or pay them and harvest human energy..... heh heh

Actually they are modifying algae to produce hydrogen.

    oh and also : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microbial_fuel_cell

Thank you for the link dhjana^^

Now if only they can make one huge reservoir of electric producing, forget the bacteria,by using modified algae or seaweed, add one more thing to that plant genes, extra absorbing carbon dioxide genes when they perform photosynthesis , we kill 2 human with one stone, energy supply and carbon emission.

now if only we can modified grass...we have plenty of that too...way wayyy too plenty...
