^ Yeah, but patents for the majority of efficient solar panels are held by Anglo, and they prevent them from being used in Africa. Anyways, why isn't burning hydrogen on of the options? It's not gonna take all that long it get it up and going in most places.

Edit: Just got through reading the plasma converter article. Pretty cool stuff. 10 years until it's turning garbage into profit. That's excellent, why aren't these things everywhere?

Because free hydrogen is very rare in the atmosphere. Its so light that the hydrogen that the earth once had has escaped the atmosphere. If you're thinking of harvesting hydrogen from water, you'll have defeated the goal - extracting hydrogen from water requires more energy than burning hydrogen.

Hmmm, I don't really know much about hydrogen converters or platinum catalysts. Is the extraction process not a clean one? If not, that's really taking the piss.

From what I gathered, each plasma converter plant is custom built at the moment, there's no standardized plan. Also it's cheaper to just toss garbage into landfills... and then there's some other stupid politic shit with the garbage management too.

I can see how the politics of it all would come into play. But if it can make money in 10 years time, then I'm sure bribes could just sort it out. I reckon these plasma plants are the way for Africa. We don't have enough electricty and we've got an over abundance of garbage. Also with all our gold/uranium/platinum mines, there is a lot of pretty toxic waste being produced. Then again, getting people interested in this stuff isn't going to be easy.

Really? I've never heard of it before, I gotta check up on it. (Some solar panels are sold here.)

A fair number of good solar panels - I know there is a town in German that pretty much runs on them - were designed here in South Africa. I guess we have enough sun light to make using them viable. The rights were bought by AngloCoal. No real surprises that they've stopped them being sold here. I see if I've still got the links to the articles lying around.

Edit: Haha. Turns out things are changing. I guess the gov has put enough pressure on Anglo. Makes sense since we started with the rolling blackouts due to the shortage of power. Here's a link on the panels - http://www.engineeringnews.co.za/pri...d-2008-08-01-1 and one with a bit of detail on the German's use thereof - http://www.mg.co.za/article/2007-08-...tar-in-germany.

aren't tidal power plants (hydro electricity) the way of the future... russia already seems to be building the biggest one (which is bad, smaller units have very little toll on tides etc.)

those can produce enough electricity for the entire world... seriously...

The greatest problem with hidroeletric is that sometimes you have to flood very large and therefore most likely isolated areas, it's expensive and depending on the size it might have geological impacts.
You could help with that gas thing by farting on a bottle if you so desire.

Also, did someone sugest gravity? Really, fucking gravity? Are you gonna pray for shit to fall and be used on turbines, like I don't know, in hidreletric energy? Or perhaps you're sugestions we can violate conservation of energy?
... oooohhhh, good one, you almost got me there troll. 6/10
If it was me that whole plants, animals and fungi stuff would have been wiped out looooooooong ago (exept the cute and the tasty of course). Itīs really is a shame that we still need them...

I would like to see a decrease in (production) price of solar panels/increase efficiency though.
In that case I guess itīs a good thing that the sahara is growing that fast...

That doesnīt sound like a long time solution, in a few milion years, the moon is too far away for this, what will the humans of that time do? (if we somehow survive the next 80 crucial years we can make it that long I guess)

^ a few million sir.... 600 odd (million) is what you're looking at i think...
even if you were not... a few million....? plus, no real harm to the environment, unlike most other projects, more cost effective than other projects...

this is the solution imo... current is the way to go...
