^What The Fuck? Some people just happen to like big parties because they can be fun. Your statement (while it may hold true for a group of people) is stupid.

Yeah. Sure. Show me a person who spends millions of dollars on a birthday party and I'll show you someone who knows how to waste money on supercilious exhibitions of pure narcissism.

YAY!!! I got 50 Cent to come to my 16th birthday!!! Because he REALLY GIVES A FUCK I turned sixteen...

    <_<

You're talking about big parties thrown by rich people; you can have big parties without being rich. In both cases you can do it just because you like to party. You've said yourself, in the past, generalising is wrong.

Theres a difference between a "big party" and inviting 2000 barely-acquaintances and hiring celebrities to show up to make yourself look important and cool. You said it yourself, two different things. I am not generalizing because the people I'm talking about aren't populous enough to make anything about them general, I'm speaking about an very specific niche of parties that cross the line from mildly extravagant to bend-over-and-kiss-my-ass-because-Slim-Shady-and-Nicole-Richie-are-here-and-that-means-i'm- THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS-cool

HAH, the first I saw when opening the thread and I thought instantaneous: COPROPHILIA! (or was it Coprophagia?)

Whatever, let rich people spend their money before they do it in another country. Hobos only run on Change and Alcohol.

(I won't say anything because I most likely deserved it.)

You replied to Yuch's post, and I'm quite sure with "big parties" she didn't mean 1000+ people. Anyway, what makes you think those people who throw BIG PARTIES do not enjoy them?

I never said they didn't enjoy them. I said they had ulterior motives.

I wouldn't know if every single one of them have ulterior motives to do so, but I'll agree that a good number of them do.

The parents may spend this kind of money as a public display of just how successful and wealthy they want others to think they are. For both the parents and the kids it can also be a case of "Keeping up with the Joneses" taken to an extreme level. One girl's parents spend a load of money on her birthday and then the other kids they socialize with run home to tell their parents all about it and probably ask for something even more extravagant for their birthday...from there it escalates.

For some rich parents it could also be a matter of trying to come up with something special for their kid's birthday when the kid can have almost anything that money can buy every day of the year. When the kid already owns some of the most expensive designer clothes and shoes, jewelry, consumer electronics, and anything else they might want...the party itself might be the only thing remaining that the parents can spend money on that can impress the kid.
