Toronto considers partial homework ban
o no, 40mins of homework a night and all the kids/parents are BAW-ing. in short, the proposal plans to dwindle homework time to a total of 10mins per night, and ban homework for holidays and long weekends.

Hey why not get rid of school altogether? Or at least make it so School is only ten minutes a day.
I like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

I'd support that, but then again, I always did my homework in class or at school somehow. In my opinion, less homework for kids would be kinda nice. What matters most isn't the homework; it's whether a teacher is effective or not. Will kids learn better from three hours of repetitive and boring questions that they probably won't spend much time on and will be tempted not to do if it isn't marked (note: this isn't true for math), or from a teacher who makes the kids want to learn and pay attention in class?
...And about the holidays: Why not? Plenty of kids go away with their parents on those days/weekends or spend time doing something else they can't get out of (like family events). Finding time for homework can be stressful... and yes, I speak from experience. Sure, some kids will have completely free holidays, but others won't have to worry about losing any free time they might be able to scavenge.

yes, but 3 hours is a long way from 40 mins. think about it: the new proposal lists 10 minutes total. if you have homework from 2 subjects that's 5 minutes each. homework from 4 subjects (which is about average) will reduce that to 2.5 minutes each. that gives you time to open your book, write your name down on a piece of paper, read the first question a bit, then go "hey i'm done!".
i'll agree about the holidays part.
but honestly, we're like one of the most laid-back country there is, and our education system is a laugh compared to some other countries'. reducing the amount of homework to kids doesn't help our country in any way - on the contrary, i think it worsens the problem. just my $0.02.
Okay, 10 minutes is a bit short for any kid past grade 3... but even 40 minutes seems like a bit much before high school (to me, anyway). It's worth pointing out that with school going to 3:30 or so on most days, and with normal kids having early bedtimes...
Our education system isn't that bad, is it? I thought we had a pretty decent education system. Maybe I've just heard too much about the American one, but the biggest problems in Ontario with regards to education seem to be where to allocate funds and a shortage of teachers.but honestly, we're like one of the most laid-back country there is, and our education system is a laugh compared to some other countries'. reducing the amount of homework to kids doesn't help our country in any way - on the contrary, i think it worsens the problem. just my $0.02.

Being from Toronto, I think I can freely say that yes, Toronto has the largest concentration of idiots in Canada. Remember its not just our politicians, its the people that vote them in.
The problem with kids can hardly be said to be homework. Its parents not being willing to actually act like parents and whip their kids into shape so to speak about being diligent about their school work and teachers that are incompetent in teaching the material.
[Imagine having attended a highschool where your computer programming teacher was actually an art teacher with absolutly no understanding of computers or math as an example.]
Its just a shame the kids are smart enough to exploit this and say its a matter of the homework being excessive and not looking into the long term effects of what this is going to cause.
Fuck, I'm not sure if this is just as bad or worse then the proposed all black school system.

Oh and @ DE, its not that we dont have enough teachers, because frankly speaking we do. We just dont have enough teachers that are specialized in something other then liberal arts.
Kids (and their parents) should whine less.
This is why Asians tend to do better in school. Because if we whine, our parents would smack us with a feather duster.
