i totally agree with you that they dropped the ball on the black-centric school thing. why do we have idiots running our school board ? black-centric schools have been done in the U.S. and have proven to have crappy results. the problem isn't with the school, it's with the families.
but i disagree with you on the homework-is-useless thing. for one, it puts some responsibility and discipline on the kids. and honestly, our city could really use some of that. besides, cooking + spending time with family was only a suggestion. given time off, i doubt many people would spend that time with family. those that have a good relation with family will spend time regardless. those that don't, won't.
i was wondering about the reading thing too - heck, 10 minutes isn't long enough to do reading comprehension questions on a simple english assignment. hope you got an extension for that though.
The changes in courses in the past 5 years have not been very beneficial for students in Toronto. When they removed OAC they removed a critical part of Canadian education, although I was still in grade 7 back then, many teachers have confronted us about its usefulness. Recent changes to our math courses have also been very disadvantageous to us. The fact that MHF4U(Advanced Functions) has become a pre-requisite for MCV4U(Calculus and Vectors) is plain stupid. I believe that change is good and they do need to update the curriculum; however, such drastic change was not needed. There has been a lot of debate over this whole homework problem, and from what I hear, many parent's especially from the Chinese community reject the idea.
