Thread: Legality of Prostitution?

In the soon to be wake of the Eliot Spitzer scandal:

It seems former mayor Ed Koch is in favor of legalizing prostitution. Although that has little to do with Eliot Spitzer (whom I voted for) and his case, hes up for money laundering to secretly pay for his prostitute... what does the ST community think? If by some miracle it was ever proposed, would you support legalizing prostitution? We all know sex sells, why not sell it literally?

I do not see the problem with prostitution. No one is forcing people to hang around with prostitutes or gigolos; it is their choice.

Although, I think there would be the need to keep some sort of registry for the ones doing this, and have them have periodical medical checks, in order to protect their clients.

Who thinks we should have some sort of current issues forum (with SD as mod? ).

I think prostitutes are degrading themselves by taking up that line of work, and potentially putting themselves into dangerous situations as well as potentially catching and/or spreading any number of sexually transmitted diseases. I feel that prostitution should not be legal.

I can understand that prostitution will never go away and that by legalising it we could put procedures in place to control the dangers and reduce STDs... but from a moral standpoint I just can't condone it.

Religion aside, it's entirely dependent on your personal opinions on sex. I think in reality it's played up to be a far more sacred thing than the act itself is. Granted you'll have your special moments but that's entirely because of who you're with not what you're doing. This probably isn't even worth mentioning for it's obviousness but some people don't seem to be able to separate the two.

Personally I think if we actually had societies based on logic and reason it, as in purchased sex, would be a highly regulated, respected, safe and thriving business wherein everyone (c/w)ould benefit. As things are I imagine it's mostly run by unscrupulous fucks, and the ones doing the actual... leg work (see what I did thar) are getting utterly... shafted...(I think I need a fire extinguisher).

I'm not religious, at all. That doesn't mean I don't have morals.

Do you think being a slut is moral? Sure, a prostitute gets paid, but they're both degrading themselves in the same way.

The problem is that partents may force their Children to sell themselves... it happens now and if it does become legal then it will happen a lot more often... you can say lets keep the sluts under check so no underaged girl will end as one, but that is imposible... if you make it legal then the border line bbecomes unclear, if a 19 years old girl that sells herself is legal, then there is no problem with one with only haves 18 years old, then where is going to stop... I mean 14 years old girls can pretent they are 18 >_> and in many countries get fake papers is not hard at all >_> so well...

better get em legal cause legal or illegal, prostitution won't disappear just like gamble(which end up legal). its better if the goverment got hold on these and i dunno making them as assets? or watever, at least the money is clear where it come from and goes to.

It's where Prostitute have to paid for taxes and there for social security system.

Brothels are licensed legal businesses which are allowed to advertise. Pimping and trafficking human beings is illegal.

and prostitutes must be at least 18 years old, while for "boyfriend-fuck" the age is 16

So I don't see how Parents pimp their own children to strangers

Of course prostitution should be legal - and regulated by a government organization. Whether it's legal or not, it's always going to exist. Legalizing it means regulation can occur, which would make work safer for those prostitutes. Abuse would be minimized without pimps, and condoms and other STD-preventing measures could be taken. The, um, "workers" could receive health care benefits (where they don't have them already) and possibly easier access to check-ups and medication if necessary. If they're government workers, they could even receive regular work benefits (no, this is not a sexual innuendo) too... People don't usually become prostitutes because they want to, but because they don't have any other options to make money. Why punish them for not being able to choose a better life for themselves?

I personally don't like the idea of prostitution at all either, but no matter our views, there will always be those who support paying for sex and want it, and there will always be those who have no other way to support themselves than by selling their body. The protection of the latter group is important, too...

Not the same thing. Plus slut is a sexist word because men are bigger sluts than women could ever be. Plus there are male prostitutes.

Edit: Governor Spitzer resigned. I'm livid.
