    The Story:

    September/October 2007 - I buy a Zune. My friend is well connected in Ebay and gets me the 30 gig for a cool $150 no tax. He pockets a few dollars, I get a massive discount, and all is right in the world. The Zune software is a zillion times faster than WMP 11 so I toss it and make Zune my default player. I load my Zune with tunes, porn, and ill gotten movies. I laugh at Surf's Up and Evan Almighty on the B train to school. I am happy

    November 2007 - Microsoft launches the 2nd gen Zune with 80 GB of space, a glass screen thats a fifth of an inch larger, and their new brushpad control scheme. It's beautiful. I beat myself senseless for not doing the math and not knowing that the Zune 2 was coming a month after I bought it. I cry.

    The Zune 2 is launched.

    The software update comes, I download, I install on my Zune, I install on my computer, I divide by zero in my head, world ends.

    WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED!?!?

    ...

    What just happened?

    Where'd the Zune program go?

    It closed. Why? WTF is going on?!?

    Oh sweet jesus the player is ok, it works!

    Damn, nothings working, it just insta-crashes... ARGH. Please god no.

    Its ok, Its ok. The Zune team is probably aware of the few bugs and they'll issue a patch pretty soon.

    Uninstall it and reinstall it not as an Administrator but on your computer's Guest account
    Update Windows as many times as it will let you
    Rename the folders in your registry and give the Zune folder a new name and location

    ... Ok. All I can do now is wait. I reported the error to Microsoft something will happen. Eventually... right? RIGHT?!

    I'm wondering if Dalton has ever worked retail..........and retail is the worst souce of information out there. EB might and it's a very big might be a valid source of information but there is entirely to much EB hate for them to be taken seriously. With ANY major retailer you can buy a 360 and within x amount of time take it back say you don't like it and the store will simply take it back they do not test it or anything they just take it back no questions asked. Then after the store takes it back they then send it back to MS as "defective"........So again the 30&#37; fail rate of the 360 is most likely extremely exaggerated and since some people are in the habit of bagging on MS and using "rumor sources" why not come up with something by MS themselves.........wait wait no n'm if it's on the internet and even if it's reported and the facts may indeed not be facts they are diehard facts.........I forgot guys you're all right, all your speculation sites with no info from the actually company are completely spot on. It's a good thing you guys know how big box retailers work.

    I really really I mean really enjoyed the spot in one of those articles where a guy goes "the 360 will fail eventually" i mean talk about being Mr Obvious because EVERYTHING fails eventually. Dumbest statement ever someone should give that guy a medal or something. And do you want to know WHY they return the devices without testing.........BECAUSE THEY STILL GET CREDIT FOR THEM. They lose NO MONEY doing this at all whatsoever.
    Sure. But that's for NEW UNITS the older ones still have the EXACT SAME FAILURE RATE. Plus, nearly 20% is still high, and the underlying design flaw hasn't been fixed. Besides, the point is he asked 'where did you come up with 30%' like there was no legit source for the info. That's the point!

    Anyone trying to be anything other than a flaming ahole would have done what you did and said, hey that only affects old units, but to act like the 30% number is made up is near the height of ducebaggery.

    On an ancillary note, I'd like to point out how much I hate you all right now. I know thats makes it all the more likely for me not to get my problem addressed but I think reading those two threads you'll find my sentiment more than justified twice over.     can't you call support ? if such a thing exists. you could stir up shit with floods of emails/phone calls to customer support until they're forced to give you a new one for free.

    The software doesn't work on YOUR machine?

    Or any machine that you install..

    Because, what I read you did lots of stuff and the error keeps comming up..
    So maybe only a CLEAN install of windows might fix it.. or at least pinpoint what is causing that error, sure its a heck lot of work, but I think would take you about one day to backup,format,reinstall everything, two tops if you work early and have to sleep early.

    Sure its mostly Zune's support team fault for not helping you in all theses months, 3 months is unreasonable.

    And you said that the first version worked right? can't you rollback to that?

    I'm almost rolling back my video driver... I updated because I'm a FOOL.. and now my OpenGL is gone bunkers(something that WAS working)

    Pardon my guess, have you try resetting it?.Unfortunately, that the only hope you got anyway.

    In my last 3 years owning Ipod(video), it dropped 2 meter ,almost soaked in water, only jammed 4 times in its lifetime.
    My God,what did you do to ur Ipod to have crashed 3 times?(btw,I never update my Ipod,cause I dun trust the update after my Ipod jammed after update. yeah,its at v1.1.heh

    I'll try actually solving your problem.

    According to the picture in one of your quotes, the Zune software is throwing a System.ArgumentNullException. You say it was updating your music library to work with the latest version of the software, so I guess they must have changed the database that they used to store all of the library information somehow. It's possible that during the process of converting the old database to the new database it's encountering a NULL value (a non-existant piece of data) where it expected to find some data. This could be something as simple as missing IDv3 info in an MP3 which was saved as a NULL instead of an empty string.

    Don't get frustrated if these are things you've already tried, but I'm going to mention them again just in-case it's something that may have been overlooked.

    - Tried installing the OLD version of the Zune software again, then manually filling in any missing gaps in the track information? (Artist, Album, Track No., etc)
    - Does the software require the latest version of the .NET Framework? If so, you may have .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 installed, but I think there's a newer version out now.


    If neither of those work, there's an article with a problem that seems similar to yours which may help. It seems that database errors can occur when upgrading to the latest version of Zune software, incorrectly categorising your music. You may have encountered a null exception as a result of this problem:

    Download the collection reset tool mentioned on that page and follow the instructions to rebuild your media library manually.
