Validation - You Are Not The Only One Who Ever...
I read Nancy Friday's Secret Garden back in the 70s when it first came out. As amazing as the fantasies are - and with all due respect to the Critic's Review, they ARE pretty amazing - what was more amazing was the sheer variety, and the courage and strength of the women who dared to write to a stranger and reveal the thoughts that they weren't supposed to have. Friday's commentary makes interesting reading, and for all that it's been over 30 years since this book first made headlines - girls have not changed all that much. As a mother of teenage girls, and as someone who works with and spends time with young women in many settings, I can testify to the fact that while the young women of today may be more openly accepting of their own sexuality - in the world of fantasy, each of them still feels that she is the only girl in the world who thinks these dirty thoughts. Friday's respondents are remarkably candid, wonderfully creative and heartbreakingly alone. There's far more to this book than the fantasies... there's validation for every woman who ever believed that there must be something wrong with her for having these thoughts.
