Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to work in most cases. A politician is a politician is a politician when behind closed doors.
I can say this though: George Bush has proven that a Republican can be a historically gargantuan fiscal liberal, and yet his party and associates will gladly, and frequently, use "they'll raise taxes" and "they'll hurt our economy" as arguments against their Democratic opponents.
