    ^^exactly.

Myspace, facebook, xanga, forums, youtube, ect. We all got different tastes and preferences. Technically, all of the above are a waste of time. But we still somehow do it.

Myspace? Oh god, don't get me started.

I hold the theory that myspace is populated by all the popular kids with nothing to do, who hang out at bus stops and malls in gangs because they think that hanging out with the other "popular kids" makes them seem cool, the decided to get onto this new crazy fad thing called the "in-ter-net", but did so with no real goal or reason. Then myspace shows up and allows them to create a profile to show the world how "cool" and in-ter-net savy they are, it allows them to make "friends" with a single click. "Popular kid" mentality then sets back in, and the goal is to have as many "friends" as possible, because the less "friends" they have, the less popular they are. This becomes the whole reason they are on the internet, and they then tend to assume that its the same for everyone else and this is why you sometimes get idiots drifting into the better parts of the internet (what I call the real internet).

Typically from what I've seen, most of the conversations that happen on myspace are just mindless vapid trash. Like I said, most of these people don't have any real goal or reason for browsing the internet, so its unlikely that any real discussion goes on on myspace.

    EDIT:

    Time for an analogy!

I like to think of the internet as an ocean (you can play in it, travel on it and fish for resources). The deeper you go, the darker and shadier it gets and the more technical experience and intelligence you need. Also, the deeper you go, the more dangerous the creatures get. Also note that those at deeper depth will always come up to the surface, but the novices at the surface will not go below a certain depth

Surface: On the surface you have the general public who like to surf (visiting sites of their favourite shows, playing the odd flash game and reading the news), on the surface there are also all the child friendly sites and learning resources, also company websites and search engines (think of search engines as fishing boats, you need the right bait for the right fish), etc...).

0-6m: Here we have people snorkeling, people looking for treasures (the analogy here is sites like eBay and amazon, also travel agents and other stuff, all the retail web sites).

6-20m: Here we have novice SCUBA divers (People using sites like facebook and myspace, slightly deeper (nearer the bottom of this depth range) and needing slightly more experience are sites like deviant art. Also at this depth are people who read blogs. We also have general info sites like wiki here.)

20-30m: Here we have the more advanced SCUBA divers (maybe using Nitrox), most recreational divers don't usually go below 30m [IRL in theory its possible to go to 50m on air, but thats very dangerous]. (The analogy here is all the porn sites, you see more colourful stuff here, but you don't need to be that intelligent to see it [not true for real diving].)

30-40m: Here we get slightly more technical, you can still go to this depth on air [I've been to 38 on air IRL (dangerous)], but you have to start paying much closer attention to what you're doing, your depth, your dive time and the decompression tables. (Here we have all the special interest sites (like stoptazmo and other otaku sites), gamer sites and webcomics.) Also at this depth, you might get a few technical divers coming up or going down to deeper depths. (For example, users of technical forums and sites, and even 4chan users from the murky depths. Also at the lower depths of this range and into the upper depths of the next, we have torrent and ed2k sites and IRC respectively.)

40-50m: Most of the divers here are technical divers breathing mixed gases and using expensive and complex equipment and have a much better understanding and more experience diving. (At this level in our scale, we have all the technical sites, like tech support forums and computer hardware and programming sites, we also have tech news sites like slashdot. This is also where all the research sites are.) You still get the odd recreational diver [who obviously doesn't have 2 brain cells to rub together, or is suffering from DCI] at this depth, but they really are way out of their depth here. (The analogy being that you get some "normal" person who thinks they know something about computers looking to impress people on a tech forum and failing miserably. Also you get the odd idiot who fucked up his/her computer and is looking for help and thinks that asking on a tech forum will yield a quick and easy solution that will be easy for them to understand (and probably give out too little info, expecting tech guys to instinctively know what the problem is from just the word "help".))

50m-the bottom: This is where the analogy starts to differ from the reality. I call these the murky depths, not because you need more technical expertise per se, but because these are the more darker shadier parts of the internet, with sites like 4chan and somethingawful. Like I said, you don't particularly need more expertise, but you do need a lot of experience (hence the phrase "lurk moar"), many people are unlikely to ever find or visit these sites, and probably even more don't even know of their existence, not knowing what lies beneath. You also get all the illegal sites here, like paedo, rape and snuff sites.

I love rants. What do you mean mindless trash? What up? Your new pic is cute. I put up some new pics! Now comment!

I guess MGS the stalker was right. To each his own... Some people who like myspace might think forums are crap. I've made a few profiles and all that ever happened was me sitting in front of the screen thinking, what now? The comments and messages I sent lead to absolutely nothing. So it lead me to thinking hmmm... those kids seem to be having fun. Am I doing this right? Am I missing something? But its funny that its a place for friends. Who in the hell looks for friends online?

Jyuu didn't even seem like he was exaggerating about that whole ten minutes thing. lol

It's not useless. When the creator makes a premium function, he gets cash. You know, like the photo logs and all that crap.

Makes me want to create one... i would be filthy rich, i wouldn't even know what to do.

(Oh yeah, for the users, yes... kinda useless, but hey i play videogames and read manga, that's not exactly useful either)
    Greetings earthlings.

i go on myspace everyday because i have friends that went to different schools that i don't mind talking to.

i'm not in it for the popularity contests.. i have like 37 friends.. i don't add random people. since they know i check everyday they know they can get a messege to me if they need to tell me something. After that i just log on to stoptazmo..

i don't think it's that bad, what annoys me is people that complain about it. I really don't see the point in trying to downplay myspace. It's not like people worship it or anything, it's just a way to keep in contact. well, for me anyway.. :/

^Why don't you get their phone number and talk ont he phone? WHy don't you instant message or email? Why don't you go see them and hang out? Why is it that virtual communication seems like a better way to keep in contact rather than real life? That's a rheotorical question.

Overall, I think Myspace is a waste of time. It's like emailing but with your picture attached to every email.

I don't think anyone is bashing myspace, dropkerplop. The cute girl (I really don't want to call her her username ) Has a point. I always found IM to be entertaining and its a hell of a lot faster than myspace. Maybe some of us are lame and don't get this hot new trend. I just found it extremely slow and boring. The sad thing about it is its gonna be a million years before it actually dies.

Meh. Xanga was really really popular about 4-5 years ago and look where it's at now. Facebook is already probably the most popular social networking site at the moment. It's only a matter of time before MySpace goes the way of Xanga, methinks.

Facebook is the best. If you complain about apps its the same thing I say about people who bash gay marriage. If you don't like them don't get one and shut the fuck up. The simple solution to overcrowding due to apps is don't get stupid apps!!! The most pointless app I have is probably Addicted to House/Grey's Anatomy and thats only because alot of my irl friends (who make up every friend I have on Facebook other than the people in the ST group) are also fans of House/Grey's Anatomy and we chat about it. Things like Top Friends, Compare People, Extended Info, Honesty Box, Friend Sex, Quizzes, Where I've Been, Greenbook, etc are actually pretty useful in a social networking environment. NO I will not join the fight of pirates and ninjas, the street racing RPG (WTF!!!) or any of those other retarded apps. Thus my Facebook page is clean imho. Plus you can minimize apps.

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends
