What kind of context do you use it in? I'm honestly curious - for me, it's never come up.

Really, I think I would feel strange using a word from the 'net. Not to mention I would be worried about saying it completely the wrong way and making a fool of myself.

Hmmm, lets see now. It's never a substitute for a good laugh, i mean how could 'lol' ever beat a good, HAHAHAHAHAHA. Get my drift? it's good for defusing situations.
eg, A says something, B is kind of annoyed, "lol (said as one word) can't believe you said that," sometimes it breaks the ice. (Granted i used it once in this context, to break up a fight between some girlfriends of mine. However, i don't recommend its use like this, it's very situational)

Other times it's on the phone with some good mates.
eg. He says something funny/describes a funny situation, "lol! (said enthusiastically- always supported with additional comment) can't believe that happened," etc.
Additionally, i've used 'l, o, l' (each letter pronounced separately) in this context as well. i find that when it's used in this manner general supporting comments are not necessary as the general meaning is conveyed.

*See the pattern? it's just another way to convey some meaning, albeit somewhat redundant.

Honestly, it's not some cultural revolution, using it does not make one dumber nor should it, it's just another way to express a certain situation/feeling. However, i don't think it should ever replace a real laugh nor should the use of 'lol' be forced. You'll know what i mean if you use it. Generally though it fits in anywhere where someone/something mildly funny has occurred and you can't be stuffed actually laughing/you want to show a little interest for the sake of it.

Just go use it, you'll see.

I forgot to mention my hot math professor (same age-range)! The one where girls who weren't even in the class would show up and sit near the front in cute outfits and giggle at him? That was really irritating. He was cute, though, so I can't really disagree with them. I just happened to be taking his class, and was thus trying to actually hear what he was saying. About the math. Which I was actually interested in.

But that guy was great. I got all sorts of compliments from him, too, when I went to see him about the first midterm during his office hours. And he gave me some more marks for it, which is always nice.

Meh. The people who don't know about it and use memes I just ignore because stuff spreads on the internet so I don't really care.

The people who go to 4chan and use memes moderately annoy me. If someone says something and it's funny then I don't care. But if they over use it it really annoys me. Talking to some anons who were just joking around and saying shoop da woop and such and I wasn't really saying anything cause we were playing games but when it got really annoying I just said "one and two" and they shut up.
