No, she should have called the police which would have fined the parents if it was a prank. If this fine isn't high enough to retrieve the money lost by the city, then it should be upped ! But in any case people shouldn't be left dying only because the caller has a weird voice.

They are if the mistake was too big. Each job has its own responsabilities...

I haven't found a clear answer to this one. If you do, let me know (Edit: I'm talking about imprisonment).
Also, I take back my comparison of medical malpractice to this situation. There are so many more sources of error in medical malpractice I wasn't aware of.

Not meaning to leech, but this is more or less my sentiment as well. By virtue of being in a profession where you have to respond to emergency situations and essentially prevent as much damage and harm as possible, mishandling the situation in such a manner should require severe punishment. Even if the woman wasn't drunk or high, she still handled the situation without the judgment her job called for and may have indirectly killed a person as a result.

Well, the article says that the woman would have died anyway, even if the earlier call had have been responded to, so it's not like she's responsible for the death or anything....

I kinda sympathise with her - it must be tricky sending out cops to pranks (and when it's kids, chances are, there wouldn't be any comeuppance other than a stern warning), and then getting a real emergency, and having no cops left to send.

In my opinion, her real mistake was telling the kid that she was sending a cop car and then not doing so. If she had have flat-out rejected the call, the kid would have tried something else. But after he was told a cop was coming, he would have just been sitting there, waiting, thinking there wasn't anything else he could do, and just wondering what was taking the car so long.

nah, no one could be sure if she couldn't be saved at the time of the call, and it was the 911 operator's responsibility to call for help.

i agree here. she got in deep trouble by lying to the boy; in my opinion that was the cause for her punishment.

The woman would be dead no matter what, if she had sent the cops or not..
So the sentence was very exagerated.

Tho even tho they might think its a prank.. like said, it she should have dispached one patrol car.

whether the mother would have died or not is not the problem, she didn't do her job, period. You just can't say "she would have died anyway" afterwards, it's like looking at history and critisizing people because they didn't know something that was to be discovered later. . .
Keep in mind her sentence is supposed to serve as an EXAMPLE for others, so such accidents will happen less often in the future.

edit : btw, I think 1 year is enough as it serves its purpose well without being too much because the woman must already be regretful of her mistake..
