Default Laptops in Class; Friend or Foe?

so I'm sitting in class, bored out of my mind, trying to figure out if my ability to browse ST instead of paying attention is a good or a bad thing. on one side, I can take better and faster notes, check things up I don't understand and distract myself from the painful lecture. On the other hand, it means I'm not paying attentionand I find it annoying when others are watching movies in class...

What do you think? do you hate those idiots with their laptops in class? are they a useful learnig tool?

OH! and what do you think about some universities banning laptops in class? and what about highschool vs. university?

I think we as students should have the right to bring our laptops to class. After all, we're paying tuition and if we want to squander it all away, that's our prerogative.

As for distracting others, I don't find it to be a problem. I mean, if they truly cared about the class and was actually paying attention, they shouldn't be distracted if I'm on Facebook or whatever.

For example, my first lecture today was for PoliSci and the prof's a pretty interesting guy. So most people in class were paying attention except for the few who need to have Internet fed to the intravenously when they're not connected to the 'web. No one payed them any mind; I know I didn't.

Personally, I always bring my laptop to class. If the class is good, I use it to take notes/check out the links in the PPT presentations. If it's boring...well then I morph into one of those idiots checking Facebook and watching Superbad.

I love the idea of a laptop, you can take it anywhere you want and still have acces to the information you need. BUT, I have never heard of a single person who have taken His/her's laptop top shcool and actually have learned or have a producitve session. You can easily make the same amount of notes, etc, its only a bity easier with word, then writing on regualr paper. (regarding deleating stuff) Most schools I know off have computers avalible if students needs to research a subject on the web, if they can't be bothered goin to the library. so its for the sake of convenience (Dunno if thats the right word) that its a good idea to have your/or a laptop to school. But if you can focus, and not start looking for new threads on ST :b Its a great tool to learn and take quick notes.

But I voted "No, they're distracting and loud" because in most cases..they're distracting and loud...

My school even advices you to buy one. You can get one from the school for a better price, but you buy another one if you want to.

    I'm studying IT and its a very big advantage for us (IT-students), especially during the programming or networking class, because you can try everything immediately out. I don't think that I would be able to program like I can today if I didn't have a laptop with me at school. But its really like a double edged sword, its very tending to just go and play some games, or visit some websites, etc.. and that part of having a laptop with me at school has screwed me at a couple of classes ;_;

I actually rather learn most things directly from a piece of paper, but it's easier if you're working with a laptop. For example, if the prof is reading from a powerpoint, he puts it immediately on the online blackboard so you can download it.

Yeah, usually I'd rather take notes, especially for math class, ESPECIALLY math. But on the other hand, my algorithm course, the actual information comes in great spurts and it's hard for me to keep up if I'm writing... whereas typing, I have many more notes than I would otherwise. I always try to have paper handy too.. eh, it's just I feel guilty but when the prof is going on about something we don't even have to know, that we ALREADY know for above 10 min... >_>

But yeah.. I only take out my laptop for a couple classes.

I can honestly say that if you dropped laptops on every kid in my highschool and they were allowed to use them in class it would just be chaos...

I'm not saying it couldn't be a useful tool but it would just get abused in highschool. Mabye if it was at the teachers discretion as to who specifically could use them and who couldn't not mabye...

But I see no problem with it in a university. I would hope by that time people are mature enough and care enough about the class to not waste time distracting people. Besides, like beowulf said if you care about the class then you should be able to tune out a couple of morons...

Math is actually one of those few classes where I take notes on paper, some students even use their laptop for math :S well, I actually do that to, but that's because I don't print my course, and read it immediately from my laptop. Also that way I can check my mails when I'm done with something xD, but it gets really tending after a while to go on a "look through wikipedia or google" spree and then, before you realize it, they're at the next chapter <_<

I like it but if the class is boring I tend to wander here. Its was indispensable in my General Engineering class though.

of course it depends on the person. It's a tool that can be abused, or used to its potential.

It's unnecessary most of the time, and can distract others because of the noise...
This said, it's cool when someone type the course and then post it on the internet
