Thread: help with scanlation terminology

I couldn't find a place to post this so I hope here is appropriate.

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what each job entitles for a scanlation team.

Translator - I get what they do

Editor- ?

Typesetter - ?

Proofreader - ? I get the basic idea but I need someone to go more indepth

Quality Checker - ? What exactly do they check for

Isn't the editor who erases the original text?
typesetter is who types the text in the bubbles and such?
proofreader is who rereads the whole thing to see if there are any mistakes.
right? I'm just guession on all of these.

Editor - erases original text, and makes the raw look more clean, so that you can see it more clearly. Basically, makes the whole thing look better. Also, if the same of a technique is not in a word bubble, they often erase Jap. name, fix lines and stuff, than put name in in English.

Typesetter - No clue...

Proofreader - This basically does the work of the translator again, compares what they got, and in places of different translations, looks it over with care, possibly pulling out dictionaries and other stuff to check which is right

Quality Checker - checks how nice the whole thing looks

typesetter is the one who types the english text.

translator- takes the raws and translated them, producing a script.

Proofreader- takes the script and checks for grammar and spelling mistakes and such. Makes sure the dialogue makes sense and is easy to understand.

Editor- takes out the japanese text and redraws whats needed if text is outside of bubble. Gets rid of dirt from scanning the pages and makes it look nicer and more appealing.

Typesetter - takes the final proofread script and types in all the dialogue in the correct area. There's a certain way to do it so it's easy to read and easy on the eyes.

Quality Checker- checks over the whole finished chapter and pretty much just makes sure everyone did their job good pointing out mistakes that need to be fixed.

That's pretty much how it works in a scanlation team to produce one chapter of manga.

The scanlation process is done in this order...

1) Translator - somebody who changes RAWS (which are usually in Japanese) and translates it to English.

2) Proofreader- because sometimes translators have choppy English, the Proofreader looks for grammatical errors so the story flows properly and changes them.

3) Editor- Editor takes the original RAWS scans and cleans them. This means they do things such as removing the Japanese in the bubbles text and making the drawings crisp and clean by using a program such as Photoshop.

4) Typesetter- This person takes the translated and proofread script and places the words in the right bubbles for the scans already cleaned by the editor. This person must use certain fonts and text formats such as knowing when to CAPITALIZE words to create a statement.

5) Quality Checker - makes sures everyone did their job right before zipping the scans for public release.

You people are a thinking a bit wrong here. Cleaner is the one who works with raws and cleans them, thus cleaner. Typesetter types in the bubbles and where the cleaner redrew. If the same person does both those jobs he is called editor.

Why was this question asked? Its self explanatory.

Editor: Edits.

Typesetter: Sets type.

Proof reader: Proof reads.

Quality checker: Checks quality.
