^ yeah that's true too. Fans should be placed at a corner or wall, and people should sleep on the opposite side of the room. They'll feel cool enough to sleep comfortably but they won't get sick either.
Fans should be placed where they can best circulate the air in the room. A fan blowing in your direction may make you feel cool, but it will dry you out very quickly (and blow lots of dust and god knows what else in your face), the best way to use a fan is place it so that it creates a constant flow of air around the room (which will help cool it down anyway). On a hot day I open the window and use a fan to circulate the air. That way the air is fresh and it brings in cooler air.
You are exactly correct. I always place my fans facing perpendicularly to a wall that I'm not facing. That way, the air is circulated without having the wind contact the skin of any sleeping person. The important thing is the circulation without the chill.
