Because, he based his book off of the legends of the Knights Templar.

And yeah CoS is right. The greedy French king was in debt to the Templars (which was one of the richest organizations at the time, they're considered one of the first bankers of Europe). So, he forced the Pope to say the Templars were heretics, imprisoned the grand master (who was in France at the time) and went to go and take the Templar riches. Only for it to mysteriously disappear. They say the Free Masons were founded by Templars who had escaped persecution or were absorbed into the other orders such as the Knights Hospitaller.

Legends about the Knights Templar are that they protect the holy bloodline, they worshipped the head of John the Baptist or the head of a demon named Baphomet, they had the Holy Grail in their possession, and etc.

Currently, no one knows where the Templar riches are. If you've seen the movie National Treasure, you might get an idea of what kind of riches the Templars were said to have.

If you want to do some reading about the Knights Templar, read Wikipedia's article about it

but... but.. my bunny girl has only 45 minutes left before it's too late :O

about the fall of the Templars, the French king (Philippe-le-Bel) ordered to imprison all the templars and even though a lot escaped the master Jacques de Molay was caught and put in jail, but it is only 5 years later that the order is officially dismantled by the pope (a French one too) without a real judgement by the papacy as most Council Fathers didn't agree with that.

I think that Castro was born on a Friday 13th. It seems that you only get bad luck if you are a Templar Knight, or Cuban.

That's why I said that they were affected by Friday 13th. It'd be hilarious if the one that succeeds Castro was born on a Tuesday 13th, and is as strict as Castro.

I've been really busy; perhaps, I can log on IRC tomorrow.

Um... I don't understand you logic about Castro's successor because there will be no successor, Castro is actually an alien android he won't ever die.
