And yeah CoS is right. The greedy French king was in debt to the Templars (which was one of the richest organizations at the time, they're considered one of the first bankers of Europe). So, he forced the Pope to say the Templars were heretics, imprisoned the grand master (who was in France at the time) and went to go and take the Templar riches. Only for it to mysteriously disappear. They say the Free Masons were founded by Templars who had escaped persecution or were absorbed into the other orders such as the Knights Hospitaller.
Legends about the Knights Templar are that they protect the holy bloodline, they worshipped the head of John the Baptist or the head of a demon named Baphomet, they had the Holy Grail in their possession, and etc.
Currently, no one knows where the Templar riches are. If you've seen the movie National Treasure, you might get an idea of what kind of riches the Templars were said to have.
