^ Really? That can't be cheap or environmentally friendly...

Do you know why 99% of the cars today use oil ? because it is a uniform, manageable (and once cheap) form of energy !
If it was not for these advantages all cars would have been electric for decades (the first car to go faster than 100km/h was electric, in 1899 !)

Why did oil cars suppress them then ? because electric cars problems have always been the storage of energy, and it is still the n1 problem as of now. And instead of a lot of heavy and expensive batteries it is more interesting to put a can of hydrogen to provide the electricity
The second advantage of hydrogen is that your can of hydrogen can be refilled in a matter of seconds (as for oil cars) instead of hours if you only used batteries ^^

Also, most hydrogen is not produced via electrolysis as of now because it costs too much (it's cheaper to retrieve hydrogen from natural gas or the like), but when oil and gas will be scarce it will definitely be very interesting.

I just had a stupid idea. Since the production of hydrogen requires water and electricity why not station the production facilities in hydroelectric powerplants. Hydroelectric power plants are self sufficient and can power themselves and the pure hydrogen production facility...

they could, but that would be as much electricity not sent on the network and as i said electrolysis is not cheap enough yet so companies won't do that (also your reserve of water would be used too quickly, though it can be interesting if the level of water is too high and there is no demand of electricity on the network ! it would avoid losing energy)

There are times when the demand for electricity is lower too, so instead of reducing the output of electricity sent on the network they could definitely use this electricity to convert water to hydrogen

I dunno how reliable it is (as usual) but wikipedia has an interesting article on it and it includes using a power plant to exclusively power hydrogen production

i forgot on advantage of hydrogen : you can produce it even in places far from population. By example if you make a off shore aeolian plant far from the coast it would be dumb to link it to the electricity network, but if you make hydrogen in the meantime you will have something easier to carry for sale

btw i did only read the beginning of the wikipedia article and it seems good enough

What about all the other stuff oil makes besides energy?
