I am gutted to say that I may as well reveal my true identity as Tony Blair.

Yeah I read that too, its a shame that the media is being taken in by these types of sites and just assuming that that is what the internet is all about. Fact is social networking sites barely even scratch the surface and are crap ways of making friends in my opinion.

I doubt you actually make friends though. More like "hey yeah hi". Plus chances you will meet someone creepy are likely. Agree with 98 though that the media takes these types of sites and assume that is the whole internet.

If I had that kind of money to spend I wouldn't use it to have somebody else sit behind a computer while I work. I would sit behind the computer while other people work.

there's actually a vast number of people that use Facebook. from my personal standpoint, probably around 80% of my friends IRL who have internet has facebook.

facebook's definitely the best social networking tool around, much better than others like friendster, flixster, or myspace. personally though, i don't really use it, and don't find it too addicting.

and people *do* meet other people from over the internet. it's not common, but it does happen enough times.

about the article, i think it's just... sad, that people are paying other people to update about their lives. the point of blogs/etc are for people to know the blogger better (thus for politicians/etc to connect better with the populace), and this completely defeats the point.
