That is no point at all. Afterall, they made the choice to become a gang member. All that was necessary for them to have the chance of a better life is for them to make the choice to NOT become a gang member.

You can't say someone has no choice not to shoot themselves in the foot after they have already shot themselves in the foot, that is the worst kind of logic.

How about this there is always a choice, but sometimes the choices given are either already somehow manipulated by others or not fully explained.

Okay when do you see a gang member being famous or at least part of a stable social life if they are NOT playing a sport or singing?

too many variables and to vague to actually have a concise answer. yes you do have a choice, but say the gang keeps harassing your family and one day threatens them unless you join. technically speaking you do have a choice but it's very gray area.

was never there before, I would probally never set a foot there.
I just use that to compare the difference in how many choices you could get
since you were talking about Gangsters.

middle class + school = middle class job

privileged + money/education = ehh somewhere good in life
    bullshit.

My father lived in the Projects of NY.

Yea, he had some sticky situations. Got mugged twice. He even got "invited" to join a gang once. He declined it though.

And... somehow he made it. Did I mention he went to Columbia? And he has 2 degrees. (engineering & lawyer).

I swear... the lives of my parents are amazing. It's a miracle that I'm living rather comfortably compared to my parents' lives. They both started from practically dirt nothing and somehow managed to now get some nice 6 figure salaries.

Thing is your father must have had a lot of self motivation and self determination. Thing is ask your father how many of his friends that he lived near in the projects made it out?
