For chinese people, it's almost as much the ethnicity/cultural upbringing as the skin colour. One of my ex-s was chinese dated a white guy before and he had trouble with her parents. I'm half though so its like they had a connection with my mom and an expectation of what kind of culture I was bringing with me. But you know that it's like this pretty much with any group from older generations. Jewish grandmothers try to set their grandsons up with "nice jewish girls" before anyone else can get in the way. It's pretty consistent.
I think it's much more prevalent in asian families because of the language barrier. Parents want their kids to marry within their ethnicity so that they'll understand their sons and daughters-in-law.
I mean, if you're white or black, you still speak english.
I disagree. So many asian kids now have no clue how to speak their parental dialect even after years of school. This is found especially in later generations of people who immigrated. The loss of language is passed on, but the culture remains static.
My godmother is pretty mad that her son is running off to Saskatchewan to marry a white girl. I know his mandarin isn't good enough to pass the language on fully to his kids without help.
Sure sure, but I mean that the parents want any kind of advantage communication-wise.
My parents keep telling me to marry a Chinese girl so she'll actually understand what they say to her.
Actually, my mom saw my Korean girl today. She said she was pretty. :]
I can understand the language barrier, my brother is dating a Polish girl and he finds it very hard to communicate with her family, but they still get on quite well (suprisingly)
I am pretty sure that my parents were a little uncomfortable with me dating a mixed race guy at first, and I think it is fair enough to have your initial worry's but get to know the person and then judge wether their ethnicity or colour is a problem. My parents now think my bf is great.
I think that this kinda stuff is slowly becoming less of a problem... most people are becoming more open to dating people of different ethnic backrounds then themselves.
Well of course. That's why its limited to the upper end of our generation. Unless one's parents were brought up in a hardcore environment, they're generally pretty accepting. And even if they were, their kids are less likely to be as hardcore.
At the end of the day, the world is filled with to much variety to limit yourslef to just one thing.
Lol where I live theres so many different ethnic groups, everything from ALL the corners of the world, theres more foregeiners there then Swedes haha. So I've dated girls with all kinds of skin colors and cultures, but usually I like the girls from balkan most cuz thats where I'm from.
