yeah, its pest control. Prairie dogs dont really have a predator as of now, and like whoever said their tunneling system is so vast that it costs a lot of issues.

Also, you can still shoot a target at a pretty good distance with .22 LR and if not, why not use .22 WM?
A .223 magnum cartridge just seems cruel and a waste of money on such a small animal.
How is it cruel? The bullet is so comparatively large, the animal wouldn't feel a thing. IMO, though, that new .17 Hornet would be perfect for this kinda thing. A good Leopold scope, graphite barrel, a nice hidey-hole, some jerky, that would be heaven.

Also, many people thing the .223 is a little underpowered, to be honest, for killing humans. Then you got to think about the different placement of organs in the deer, and the difference in muscle and bone mass in the upper(well, forward) torso, and I think you can see why many would go for higher powered weapons with deer. Personally, I am a nostalgic person, so I like to hunt with an old Enfield chambered in .303 British.

That's true, it's hard to tell from just the video what the intent was behind recording the event. If the video causes some hunters to think "Ewwww gross!" and switch to a lower caliber rifle, spend more time practicing their shooting skills before they go out to hunt, and learn the value of getting in closer while hunting...then maybe some good might come from it.

The damage shown in the video though doesn't look like what I'd expect to see from a .223 round hitting a prairie dog...unless perhaps they were very close when they made that shot? If they had planned on being so close it would have made more sense to bring a .22 rifle instead. I don't honestly know what the result would be of close range firing a .223 rifle at a small animal because I've never hunted anything with a rifle (other than ducks with a shotgun) that was less than 100 yards away. At 100 yards I'd expect a center body shot .223 round would tear the prairie dog in half...not explode it from hydrostatic shock. A 30-06 round could probably produce that result, but as you say larger caliber hunting ammo isn't cheap and it's a waste for experienced hunters to use it on small animals if the goal is simply pest control and a clean kill.

Hum... I like prairie dogs, but after dealing with a mole in the fucking lawn for 2 years (bastard kept moving off my property so I couldn't get him... then he'd come back) before finally catching him in a trap, I can understand the ranchers. Also, you want to talk about inhumane, how 'bout that moll trap? Thing snapped the moles spine. No idea how long he was in that thing before we got out there to find him still alive... and got the hatchet... but, you gotta do what you gotta do. :P

About the deer though, last time I saw one skinned, it was missing it's front legs, not the back ones. I assumed it was for making it that much lighter to carry back to the truck, but don't know. Is there any reason for this, and which ones should be cut off?

    thanks to Silverwmoon!
