Thread: What Would You Do?

So, this is about the world-wide pandemic...

Discuss what you would do, if, due to circumstances not under your control, you survive the virus, while 99.5% of the human has been wiped out.

It is highly unlikely that anyone you know will survive, however, you can add extenuating circumstances that would result in the survival of, say, a friend, when the pandemic hits.

So, the rules to this topic shall be as follows.
In your first post, say how you would have survive [The virus is completely inert after the initial pandemic, you can still get it later, but it no longer becomes lethal, and will in fact broadly alter you on the genetic level. Possible mutations include increased muscle strength, bone strength, synaptic response time, increased ocular capabiltys, [Similar to the mantis shrimp, which has the most advanced eyes of every known creature on the planet] and also a broad range of potential detriments. You decide.] and describe your initial response.

As more people post, we can presume that all of those here have, through various circumstances, survived. Do tell what kind of person you would be, and what you would go about doing.



Now, to give some examples on how you could've survived, since I expect many people would not be able to think of suitable circumstances.
a) Upon hearing of the massive casualties, you make haste for a military closed-environemnt nuclear shelter [NORAD as an example] and only come out after the lethal stage of the virus has passed. You then come across an infected person, who's mind has been destroyed by the virus. While in the process of avoiding it, killing it, taking care of it, or whatever you would do, you are infected, and within the day, you notice that strange things are happening to you.
b) You are abducted only days before the incident happens, and have been heavily drugged since. You wake up strapped into a cot, in a hospital environment. The straps are not, however, meant to restrain a conscious person, and you free yourself. As you wander the facility, trying to find a way out, you realise that you are... different.
c) You where lucky enough to have evacuated, and made it to a facility, where they where just able to manufacture a small amount of vaccine, before they where themselves infected. You are one of the only people to get the vaccine, and while escaping the death throes of your fellow evacuees, you notice that something has happened to you since the time you woke up that day, and your hiding from the grotesque monstrosties your guardians have become.


And so: let the coming of days begin.

i survived by going out into the woods and living in the mountains for years. while out there, i became dreadfully sick and lay in a state of utter pain as my body was wracked with fever and the transformation that came with it. the dreams it gave altered my mind as well, so that i was inhibited towards... the dark side of things. by the time i came back, almost everyone was dead. i had gained only a little muscle mass, due to the harshness of my journey, but i still had gained an incredible quickness. my nerves and impulses traveled at a faster speed, so now every muscle in my body had the potential to move at speeds far greater than the average human. i travel the world now, searching for those i knew, or those that might help me find out what happened. also, those that might... be of use... to me.

You might try using a wee bit more imagination than paraphrasing the possible mutations >_>

Also, a note: An individual muscle fiber has an output of .3micronewtons. This adds up such that your larger muscles [Which are, by area, actually weaker, since individual muscle fibers take more space] having outputs of ~100-300 lbf for leg and arm muscles, with muscles like the uterus having very high outputs for being so small [~1.1kg, 100lbf] and the jaw being able to exert so much force [Very large mechanical advantage, giving about a high of 800lbf for the average person, with 975lbf for two seconds being the highest recorded output of force from any part of the human body]

So, if this virus was to, say, tweak your muscle fibers to exert an entire micronewton of force, you'd probably be able to exert more force than your unmodified bones could handle [You could life a car, but your bones wouldn't be able to support such an awkward weight, and would snap/shatter]

... I've got nothing else to say, till more peoples respond.

After a week of fishing during the holidays I'd come back and notice everything is in ruins, there is nobody in the city, I search for any life sign in the city, family, friends, anyone and find nobody.

I'd find myself some shelter but after few days I'd get hungry so I start raiding stores, finding nothing, guess the people took it away when they disappeared.
in few days I'd get sick, affected by the virus, my flesh starts to get damaged, green colors starts appearing and my muscles are getting more tired.

After a day or so I start crawling foward and luckily stumble across a food box the sami people had left in a hurry.. it's a can of radiated reindeer meat! mmm, sami people sure love that. ;o

I eat all the can's from the hunger I had and drink the preserving fluids inside the can to extinguish my thirst, this gets me even more sick so I pass out.

I'd sleep for weeks, months, the virus and radioactive reindeer meat altering my body and mind.

I'd get hairy as a reindeer, walk on all my limbs, eating the dryed leafs of the trees and looking for any sign of life, ever realizing how I've changed into a super humanreindeer.

I'd loot like there is no tomorrow (because there probably wouldn't be).

In a moment of extreme ennui-induced madness I set myself the challenge of watching all the Stargate SG-1 episodes back to back, starting from season one. Over the eight days the virus had its wicked way with the populous whilst I was holed up away in my room like a fevered hermit.

I emerge upon completion of my herculean task to find a changed world; a strange pervasive silence, empty streets, a surreal calm on the city. I take a deep breath, squint up at the harsh daylight and decide to return to my bed. I wake up the next day and find it difficult to get out of bed, as if I suddenly weigh more. I rub the sleep from my eyes and examine myself, noting with mixed feelings the cause of my confusion.

For reasons entirely unknown to my ignorant self, I have a some kind of gargantuan, super-phallus. Both shocked and awed by the sight before my eyes I proceed to examine my altered appendage. Almost as if I've undergone some kind of genetic distortion, my johnson has mutated. I discover much to my delight, in addition to greatly increased size, it also has at least 3 different vibration settings that I can find. I am stunned silent for a while and can only reason that there is indeed a God, and this entity is clearly a fan of SG-1. I am pleased. More pleased than I've had reason to be in a long time. I get dressed and decide to go forth and utilise my new gift like this God must surely want me to.

I stride out of the house, my smile beaming brighter than the glaring sun, full of joy and happiness. Indeed so full of cheer am I, that I fail to take note of the sound of a car speeding towards me. As I cross the road I am struck. I spin feet over head across the roof of the car, to land with a sickening crunch against the curb. Fetid, warm ichor sliding across my face I look at the sky and with my last breath I curse the fickle God that I will never be able to flaunt my mutant ability in all its glory. Once again an empty silence fills the street, with the exception of a very faint whirring sound...

... I haet you guys ._.

Haha lol.

I'm one of the few who receive the vaccine before the virus infects me, whilst I am in a highly guarded compound that was completeing the vaccine and was to also be one of the last strongholds of humanity should they fail. Thus sadly, not everyone had received the vaccine when it had hit the compound. Many were saved, but a few had quickly mutated into grotesque creatures. Those who were still human, and unaffected began a genocide of the monsters, whilst the monsters did the same to the humans. In the mass chaos that followed, the compound had imploded, by a self-destruct device within the main generators. I had survived by not taking part of the genocide and going near the outskirts of the compound, as it was seen that only the inner and mid parts of the compound had imploded, which was where the genocide was taking place.

I was the only one left alive, miraculously uninjured, with the vaccine still in me, set to keep me safe from the virus and any mutated strains for several years, I begin my trek towards the unknown.

With my luck I think I would be one of the ones to be exposed to the virus and survive. With enhanced nerves and eyes I would then go on a quest to quest to unite as many self-aware survivors as I can and eliminate any people who have mutated and lost their self to the virus.
