Thread: Things Happen...

... I want to know why, i was thinking about the future and I was wondering if I could predict what could happen. It all came down to Fate/Destiny, Luck, and Random Chance. If I thought my future would be decided by Fate/Destiny, then I should worry about nothing since everything will work out in the end. If I think Luck runs the universe then im screwed because I have the worst luck in the world and my hindsight is 20/20 >_>. Im leaning more towards my future being decided by Random Chance. That depending on what I do there is a finite number of possibilities and factors and those possibilities and factors have their own resultant possibilities and factors. That if I put myself in situations (I control my life's possibilities and the rest is just math) that I can guess the chances of something happening over a given amount of time.

But alas... I have yet to decide... what do you think for yourself?

meh....i this reminds me of a family meeting i had. So much crap was laid upon me, and i guess to sum it all up. I told my brother straight up, that i dont believe in fate, that i dictate my own life.

Ever since then, he's looked at me differently, in a good way that is.

isn't random chance and probability the same as luck ? for me the first is a definition of the second

about the future, of course you can't predict what will happen as there are lots of things that may or may not get in the way, so the only thing you can do (and it's not an insignificant achievement ) is try to tend toward the objective you gave yourself ^^
Of course this objective may vary (and will surely do) during time because of all the random factors, but that's it

Fate would mean, I could be without intelligence, and still follow the same actions. Don't really believe in it, sounds way too BS.

I'm not sure what you mean by luck, if you put "chance" as a different catagory.

Chance/Probability: I believe in this all the way. Except, I believe that even if I'm able to do the math, and make movements with sub-atomic precision, I could not set my future down to more than a large variation, that gets completely screwed up the moment someone whom I hadn't noticed comes into the equation. Point being, it is down to probability and chance, but it is impossible to take even a part of it into account and control your future aside from by stacking the odds in your favor.

My life is controlled by Murphy`s law. If anything CAN go wrong, it WILL go wrong. But i guess that counts as bad luck. :P

Still voted for random chance tho.

I always viewed luck and chance as two different thing (not very different but distinguishable)

Luck being "Im so lucky I win at slots without even trying!!"
Chance/Probability being "Zomg I got arrested for figuring out the mathematical formula for the slot machines and raping your casino!!!"

Luck being more like no effort is involved and Chance being you put yourself in the situation that has the highest probability of working out in your favor and or changing the situation to benefit yourself most.

That definition of chance would be more along the lines of cause-and-effect. Definition of chance doesn't require you doing anything for it.

thats why i also described it as probability

Probability is definitely my belief - we do science, if that weren't the case, science wouldn't work. Simple. Too simple even. ^_^

side note: I'd love to hear Ishman's view on this

I'm going by probability/chance based on its definition...
