Name: Hajime No Ippo
Mangaka: Morikawa Joji
Genre: Shounen, Boxing
Summary: Hajime no Ippo, simply put, is a boxing based sports manga. However, the series quickly goes beyond this simple premise and becomes something few sports series can ever achieve: A well thought out, entertaining story with likeable characters and plot that transcends the sport in question.
Makunouchi Ippo is a rather timid high school student with a kind disposition that often makes him the target of bullies. A very polite and well mannered boy, he is more often to be found helping his single mother take care of the family business then out having a good time. However, his life is suddenly changed when a chance encounter with boxer Takamura Mamoru spurs him into learning to box, a sport for which he discovers both a love of and a talent for. The series focuses on his ever upwards journey to become a better and better boxer, but detours from the typical sports manga mold by giving us a well fleshed out cast of characters that we can enjoy reading about both in and out of the ring.
Even someone that isn't a big boxing fan will find this a series worth reading. Hajime no Ippo has also been turned into a very successful seventy-five episode anime series and has inspired at least one movie and one game.
