lets not make this into a religious debate (<= Futile Plea .-. ) i think this is good, now that techniques have developed that dont require the "death" of human embryos and the potential good that they can do against previously uncurable diseases, theres no reason why President Bush has to keep up his "its ungodly" bullshit. these techniques would have been developed anyway if he had passed it the first time, im just dissapointed that advancement was impeded on such flippant of reasons with the least heavy proof to back it up.

but then again im biased. ive got a family riddled with diabetes and alzhiemers [sp?]... the fact that my christian family supports this and Good-Ole-God-Fearing Mr. Bush doesn't vexes me terribly.

i'm all for stem cell research. But mehh...bush is gonna veto it, and then they're gonna have to try and do the 2/3-rd majority vote to override the veto...we'll see what happens...

Stem Cell research is an incredible tool. I've listened to countless arguments against it, and none of them make sense.

If they won't kill the babies, I'm happy. ^_^ I think the main opposition - well, on my part - is the death of the babies - and if stem cells can actually be extracted without that death, then what's there to oppose?

My only problem is that I heard this before, and it turned out to be wrong - is this 100% confirmed now?

People are so dumb every time they say the same thing god wouldnt want this....If there is a god im sure he would want people to do whatever they can to make life better for others.

Babies? You mean embryos right?

Whether they're killed or not depends on you definition of human life, some orthodox Jews believe that "wasting" sperm on any activity that doesn't have some chance of producing a child is murder.


And no it's not confirmed, Bush is going to veto it.

I believe that from fertilization, it's life. (And I'm not going to discuss abortion views, because they're a little sketchy - and no, this isn't religious!), and killing an *embryo* for the sake of research is... I can't really agree with that. I mean, there's a reason we don't test chemicals on animals.

Oh... confirmed as in the research - that this is an actual possibility and not that guy who said it was possible and he turned out to have faked the research.

Oh, that's been done for a while. Remember when Bush was talking about using preexisting embryonic stem cells lines (this was a couple of years ago I think)? The problem with these is that they're all old or contaminated, or otherwise unusable, and he's not allowing any new lines to be developed.

Logically if adult stem cells can be used in treatments then embryonic stem cells can only be better.

And even if you don't accept that line of argument, something can only be proven after observation. Embryonic stem cell research can only yield any sort of result (even failure) only if it's first attempted.

And these are all embryos that would other wise just sit around in cold storage and die (they were extras created by in vitro fertilization but never given a surrogate mother).

I understand the logic, and I still find it a little creepy - and due to time restraints I can't argue more, but I'll just say that as long as they won't have to kill the baby/embryo, I'm happy~

i dunno but when people get into debates about why some americans dont like america. this comes to mind. here we have the perfect opportunity (as if from God himself) to cure our ailements and bring a future to dying innocent people from our own seed no less and we pass it up because we thought using a couple bits of DNA is murder. bullshit. now we dont even need the embryos and hes still gonna veto it... then people are pissed when the same dumbass wants to do more illogical things.
