Well, they DO need soldiers to fight losing wars, don't they?
What I really hate the most about the whole recruitment thing are the commercials on TV of the "Do something exciting" type. They show clips of how you get to "transmit communication and intelligence via high-tech equipment, just like in video games" or other stuff like that.
And sadly, people are stupid and they fall for that.

oh, i didn't know about that, though i have heard of a video game made by the US army to promote itself... (yeay, killing people is so fun ! do it in real life with the government's backing instead of staying behind your computer screen ~)
and that the recruits got paid really well in the beginning of the war (when they needed recruits so bad, i don't know if they get paid well nowadays)

I've heard that convicts are sometimes offered military service instead of time. Good idea.

I'd assume their sentences would be suspended in exchange for the service.
Prisoners for drug tests? Sounds good.
