I want to be a pilot when I was young but I end up as a programmer. I was curious of how do they make the games and it's characters in the game do stuffs when pressing a combination for buttons on the keypad. I was curious too of how do the bar code scanner in a super market works and how does it knows what item and it's corresponding price when the cashier scan the product.

That led me to I.T. and now I am a programmer.

Cool beans, I've always wondered how IR scanners worked and how precise they were, there have to be billions of bar codes out there.

I'd like to die with the songs I love stuck in my head. I hope to make the most of these hollow bones we become.
I raise a toast to the the souls that sang all along. I've been gathering friends to just to make some sounds,
before the ship goes down, I've been making amends by making the rounds before the whole world ends

The barcode itself is literally just a 2d encoding of the number directly beneath it. The number itself just corresponds to an item in a database; I don't know how it is in America, but in Europe out barcodes are actually called European Article Numbers (EANs) and are 13 digits long and IIRC can encode information such as product category (produce, dairy, grocery, electrical, etc), country of origin and a check digit.
The scanner itself is just a laser that scans back and forth very quickly and just measures light and dark and their lengths (time by known speed) relative to each other to decipher the code.
