I applied and got accepted at MIT but I decided to never go there. I had my essay supervised by two English Language lecturer and professor too, so that wasn't a problem.
I did hundreds of hours of community volunteering and such while I was in high school.
Being the president of the school chess club and photography club and executive member of several other clubs (school paper, teaching peers, etc), I wasn't worried about in-school extra-curricular activities.
The only crap part that could have caused me to be rejected was my physics mark being under 95%

Anyhow, what I wanted to say is:

Show that you are a freaking nerd, be proud of it but most of all, show them that you are an all-rounder who is determined to do well and has the ability to do well.

I couldn't afford to leave the place I was (and still am). I had finally decided to set foot in Mississauga (15 minutes from Toronto) after ages of not being able to decide where to go.

I'm not rich enough to move around like that.

    not rich enough? O_O

Somehow I find that hard to believe considering all the high-tech-bad-ass computer stuff you got.

Hmr... MIT's tuition, living affairs, books, ect is easily around 50K.... I doubt they give any merit/athelthic scholarships. Probably only Need-based stuff that you can apply for through FAFSA. ( http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ )

Not sure if you'll get a lot if you're out-of-country though. FAFSA can be pretty damn generous. I know a girl who went to UPENN for about 5K yearly... (instead of paying the usual 45K)

I'm a full-time computer technician/salesman/product manager/networking expert till January when I resume my computer engineering course. I get the stuff you just mentioned for about 1/3 the price you see them being sold. -_-

Plus, I am a registered MSDN subscriber and a technical adviser for Microsoft and am often invited to ATI's HQ in Markham for meetings and I get lots of freebies.

My salary isn't great though. o_O

I'm taking one semester off only.

Don't get too cocky, kid. >

    I'm just kidding.

But seriously now Issalcakes, going to MIT is a great thing but it involves lots of sacrifices (financial [unless you're wealthy], physical and mental) but it is enormously rewarding. My cousin went there and he's earning the big bucks now.

Hey! Legally, I'm not a kid anymore.

    ^_____^

Yes, MIT is rewarding-- though, so are a lot of other colleges. If you're applying to MIT you should also apply to CalTech. It has the same prestige as MIT. The only difference is geography; it's on the west coast.

Oh. and RPI is pretty good.

Err.... I know this cause I have a lot of engineer friends?? =D
