Thread: History Reference Sites

I beleive a good portion of ya'll know that college semesters are underway again. And I just wanted to ask for opinions on on-line information and reference sites. I'm not so much looking for links, as I am asking your opinion on sites you have visited and are happy with. Or, conversley, sites you would warn against. As per the title, I am focusing on history, specificaly I need information to compare and contrast Japan's goverment and/or concept of democracy or lack thereof leading into WWII, during WWII, after WWII and up to date. Enough to make a ten page paper. So it's not that bad.

And, while I feel it ought be assumed, if anyone else needs a bit of advice on finding quality information on other topics, this thread is a fine place to post.

ok here: DON'T USE THAT XD Use books for your research although you might start to learn about the topic online but don't take that for research cause that info...meh not only can it not be good but also teachers don't like it so if you have to use online sites you use official ones which means the government website and such... NOT WIKIPEDIA XD Sorry... just saw so many kids with grades that they were not expecting cause they used too much websites XD

Well I suppose specific book recemendations would also be helpful, though the teacher is requiring at least one internet reference. As well as an interview I have to give and some other things, but that is beside the point.

use books, britannica, or wikipedia. thats pretty much your only options. oh yeah, and primary sources, aka people, work too.

only japan huh? hum... im in history following a french program though... and we never really have anything about japan :S A good book about fascism is Robert O.Paxton's The Anatomy of fascism. For introduction book for any countries but i don't know the title in english is Serge Berstein and Pierre Milza History of the XXth century... Oh, read articles in important reviews or history journals like:
Journal of world history: official journal of the World History Association, The International history review, Diplomatic history, Journal of Asian history
Those are periodicals i found in my uni and two of them are an electronic source online that you can access from your college library or even at home... You just look for japan in the index thingy :P And when you found a good article you look at their sources and try to get them XD

I'm a history major, yo. Most online shit I'll advise you to avoid (people are retards and make up crap), but your school probably has subscriptions to some badass online journals. See if your school has subscriptions to:

Jstor
Academic Search Premier
Project Muse

Anything you find on those sites will be kosher since it's all gone through peer reviews and publication. I'm in the US, so if you're not, I don't know if these will be available to you.
And just go to your library. Seriously, a college library will have a ton of books on this subject.

Oh, also about books: If the book doesn't have (often very extensive) citations where it got its information from, pick another book.

I'm sure your college's libarians know a lot more about this stuff than us. You probably should ask them...

Well, I used to be able to ask this exceptional librarian at my college's library about advice on books concerning history; it was as if he had read most of them. But he quit after last semester, or at least that's what I understand.
Too bad.
So now I've turned to the forums. Your advice is appreciated.
